05 May - Player update

Extracts from John Beale's presentation to the awards dinner on May 5th

"Inevitably in the world of professional sport there will be changes for next season. We will be saying goodbye to some players who are moving on for various reasons to other Clubs, and although all have given well in service of the Club I would like to mention three in particular who I believe have served us outstandingly well.
Tom Skelding joined us at the beginning of last season, and has made considerable progress this year, when he was given the job of running the line-out in the absence of Stotty. He moves to Exeter where he will join their full-time squad.

After a disappointing season by his own standards Jimmy Aston moves a mile or two down the road to Pertemps Bees. Jimmy has been with us ever since finishing at University, and although he has suffered his share of injuries, he has given us 5 year’s sterling service.

Thirdly, Ollie Thomas is taking the long trip down the M5 to Cornish Pirates where he will be a full-time player. It is well documented that Ollie has grown up with the Club, playing as a mini, Colt and senior, and he feels that it is now time for him to move on in his personal and professional development. Ollie has been an outstandingly inventive player, and a particularly excellent goalkicker. He has found the decision to leave the Club a most difficult one to make, but he leaves with all of our best wishes for his future development. I am sure that we will not have seen the last of him in red and black hoops!

For these players and others who leave us, I give my wholehearted best wishes for the season ahead.

As for next season, we are well advanced with our planning, and I am confident that we will be a much more competitive squad next year."
