‘A’ and Development
Fixtures
This coming season matches will be
split between ‘A’ and Development fixtures.
The objective is to provide enough Monday (occasionally Wednesday) night rugby
to give both fringe/bench 1st XV players and also emerging players enough
opportunities to both keep match fit and also allow them to press their claims
for a 1st team place.
Match reports
Moseley Development 58 - 23rd Pioneer Regiment 0 - Monday 17th November
On Monday evening the Development side containing five first team players, (Ben
Buxton, Ollie Atkinson, Adam Whitney, Dan Oselton and James Ireland), played
against a 23rd Pioneer Regiment (British Army) side. Most of the opposition were
Islanders by extraction, most prevalent being Fijians.
Their running and tackling were both very Fijian-like, but nevertheless our lads
had superior organisation and played the conditions better to get a deserved win
by 58-0. We scored 10 tries, 7 coming in a free-scoring first half, at the end
of which we had an unassailable lead of 41-0.
Once again we were grateful to have a number of guest players representing us,
many of whom were former Colts. We thank them for their efforts, and their Clubs
for releasing them to play.

Moseley Development XV 8 Oxford University 24 -
Monday 6th October
This was an excellent performance by our development squad with seven Under 19
players in the team. Oxford capitalised on two mistakes early on in the first
half to score a pair of breakaway tries after Moseley were pressing the
opponents line taking the score to 0-14.
Former Moseley Colt and first teamer Matt Mountford then scored with a sixty
metre sprint down the touchline to make it 5-14 at half time. Moseley reduced
the deficit to six points with a penalty by Alex Warner and then pressed the
Blues for about ten minutes but to no avail. Oxford, with All Black legend Anton
Oliver in the side, scored two ‘late late’ tries to make it 8-24.
The result was not a fair reflection on game overall and many positives came out
of the 80 minutes. Jimmy Ireland played an hour at scrum half, his first game
back after a long lay off following a double shoulder operation and looked quite
sharp. 2nd Row Ali Muldowney has recovered from his back problems and had a full
match with several good driving runs. Four Moseley Colts (Alex Warner, Callum
MacBurnie, Dan Rowlands and John Ball) acquitted them selves very well, all
showing a lot of skill bravery and pace.
We were supported by excellent player representation from local clubs including
Bournville, Camp Hill, Stourbridge, Sutton Coldfield, Worcester and Bromsgrove.
The stand out players from these clubs were Dave Lyons (a big 2nd Row from
Worcester) and Steve Blackburn (Bromsgrove) who had an excellent match at loose
head. This was a worthwhile night for all including the support of about two
hundred spectators which was much appreciated.
From our members on the Message Board:
“Moseley Dev XV worked hard at putting pressure on Oxford with Muldowney putting
in some very good runs. Great to See James Ireland back, he put in some good
breaks and seems to have lost none of his keenness to attack. Oxford had some
good players (a former all blacks captain is a pretty useful squad member). I
was impressed by their 2nd row and No13.
Two handling errors which led to turnovers and long range run-ins in the first
half were the main problem. At the end of the day it was a team who trains and
plays together against a "scratch" Moseley team so no real criticism to those
who turned out for us”. – GB on the Message Board
“A Game Lost rather than won! It was 5 - 14 at half time with two breakaway
tries in quick succession for the Blues. The second half was very gritty until
two late unconverted tries were scored for the Blues with only a solitary
Moseley penalty in reply.
Jimmy Ireland played for around 60-70 minutes without visible injury or knock,
and made some sparkling breaks that got the supporters cheering. Unfortunately
Greg McDonald picked up a knock in the first quarter and was out of the match.
Hopefully he'll be back in action soon”. – Steve@Mose on the Message Board
From the Oxford Mail:
“Fullback Tim Catling bagged a brace of tries as Oxford University ran out 24-8
winners in a scrappy encounter at Moseley on Monday night. Catling set the Dark
Blues on their way when he picked up a loose ball in his own 22 and raced eighty
yards to touch down after thirteen minutes. Fly half Stuart O'Flanagan added the
conversion.
Two minutes later, Oxford stunned the National League One side again. This time
a loose ball was kicked through and second row Nic Van Zyl won the chase to
touch down. O'Flanagan was again on target with the conversion.
Moseley reduced the deficit with a try on the half-hour mark, before adding a
penalty five minutes into the second half. Oxford had scrum half Brendan
McKerchar sin-binned before they wrapped up victory with two unconverted tries
in the last ten minutes.
Replacement fly half Ross Swanson made a break for centre Sam Humphry-Baker to
score. And then at the death, centre Tom Gregory burst through before releasing
Catling for his second try. – Oxford Mail
