Solihull College and Moseley
Rugby Club have launched a unique apprenticeship scheme that will enable
talented young players to combine playing, training and skills development
with studying for a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching. |

Richard Deane, Head of
School for Sport at Solihull College said: “For the first time these
students will combine their sport with studying for a Foundation Degree in
Sports Coaching. Moseley Rugby’s extensive community programme will
provide the students with a practical dimension to their studies, as they
will be able to go out into the community and deliver coaching sessions, not
just in Rugby, but in a variety of sports.”
Dan Protherough, the Club’s Head of Sports Development, said: “The scheme
will offer potential, professional rugby players with an academic element to
their sport so that alternative career paths are available in later life
when their playing careers come to an end. That has to be a positive thing
and we are pleased to be working with Solihull College on the scheme.”
The new programme will also help to meet the growing demand for qualified
sports coaches to work in schools and communities as government initiatives
increase sporting activities in schools from 2 to 5 hours per week and look
to develop extra curriculum sports in schools via the extended schools
initiative.
The Foundation degree covers subject such as Physiology, Psychology, Skills
Acquisition and a variety of Coaching Awards. It represents the first two
years of a degree programme and students will be able to convert these
qualifications into full degrees by completing a third year of study at
higher education institutions such as the University of Derby, University of
Worcester and the University of Wolverhampton.
