31 March - Greg Macdonald switches to refereeing

Best wishes to Greg from all at Moseley for a long and successful journey on his chosen road. As the RFU website reports...........

"Former Moseley fly-half Greg Macdonald has set his sights as a top flight rugby referee having ended his playing career.

The 28-year old only recently secured his release from his contract with Moseley after a ten-year career in the National Leagues but is now aiming to make rapid progress through the refereeing ranks.

Though Macdonald’s playing career only officially ended earlier this month he obtained his Entry Level Referee Award last year and began refereeing occasional matches earlier this season.

He took charged of the National Under-20 Championship match between Oxford University and North Midlands at Iffley Road three weeks ago and his recent league appointments have included the Midlands Three West (North) game between Aston OE and Bournville the Midlands Two West match between Dudley Kingswinford and Cheltenham North.

Macdonald has followed in the footsteps of his father Colin, a referee and National Leagues touch judge, and his decision to retire from playing was partly taken to give him the best chance of progressing as a referee.

“My decision to retire from playing was made easier for my by the fact that I wasn’t playing first team rugby at Moseley,” Macdonald said.

“I played a few games on loan at Sutton Coldfield but I didn’t get the same buzz out of the game.

“If it had been a season like last year’s then it might have been different.

“But I am enjoying refereeing. It’s not quite the same as playing but I still get nervous before a game and I do get a real buzz out of it.

“I want to aspire to referee at the highest level that I can, Premiership or even international level if that’s possible, and I’m still young enough to be able to do that which is one of the reasons for stopping playing now.”

Though Macdonald’s Moseley career might have ended on a low note as he broke an ankle in his last appearance against Sedgley Park in the final game of last season, he regards his time with them with fondness.

“I joined Moseley in 1999 when I was at Birmingham University and John White was coach, so it was a long association,” Macdonald said.

“It would be easy to be bitter about breaking my ankle in my last game for Moseley but I had some good times with them and being part of the side that won the National Two title and got the club back into National One is probably the highlight of my career.”

06 March 2009 - New face at openside

The new face in the matchday squad for the Esher game is Jake Abbott, a Worcester academy openside who signed on loan just before the transfer deadline last week. Profile

13 February 2009 - Another Success for Mose M&J

The latest in a long line of successes for Moseley Mini & Junior section is marked by the naming in tomorrow's squad of Charley Thomas, who earned his place, most recently with a fine performance for the Midlands U20s in the County Championship against Warwickshire last weekend. Profile

03 February 2009 - England under-20 Six Nations

ENGLAND U20 have named their 22-man squad for the opening RBS under-20 Six Nations game against Italy. Sadly it can't include Dave Lewis, who was part of the original group, but has been ruled out after breaking his ankle in the Guinness Premiership game against London Irish last Saturday. We wish him a speedy recovery. Congratulations to the Moseley/Gloucester players who are included: Dan Williams, Charlie Sharples and Henry Trinder

02 February 2009 - Rodwell and Norton in sevens call up

England Sevens coach Ben Ryan has handed Mosley's James Rodwell a second chance on the Sevens circuit having been named for the Wellington and San Diego legs of the IRB Sevens World Series, in a squad that already includes dual registeree Dan Norton.

30 January 2009 - Player movement news

JIMMY IRELAND Jimmy has been released by the club to play for Parma in Italy from this weekend. He will start as no 2 behind the 1st XV captain there but will be in the match day squad and therefore have the opportunity of playing every week. John Beale Moseley Director of Rugby commented:

“The effect of recovering from major injuries and surgery last year and the good form of the two scrum halves who moved ahead of him have limited Jimmy’s opportunities at Moseley this season. The move to Parma will enable him to have regular rugby and hopefully he will be able to recover full match fitness.

As a Moseley produced player from an early age it is a difficult decision to release him although we feel that it is best for everyone for this move to take place. With the tight financial controls in place at the club we are limited in the number of players we can accommodate in the playing squad. We would like to thank Jimmy for his contribution and commitment to the club and wish him well in the future. There will always be welcome for him at Billesley.”

OLIVER ATKINSON Ollie is being released by Moseley on January 31st. He has been aware of this for some time and his loan arrangement has come to an end with Fylde who are unable to sign him directly. Oliver is currently in negotiation with another club from January 31st. John Beale commented:

“The opportunities have also been limited for Oliver at Moseley this season and he has been on loan to Fylde for a number of weeks now. With the tight financial controls in place at the club we are limited in the number of players we can accommodate in the playing squad and this regrettably has contributed to his departure. We would like to thank him also for his contribution to the club and wish him well in the future. He will also be welcome to visit Billesley”

16 December 2008 - Mason Wins appeal

In a hearing held at the Coventry Holiday Inn Neil Mason won his appeal against the second yellow card in the game against Leeds.

Mason was sent off for two yellow cards in the match on November 23, the second for allegedly taking a man out in the air.

But the appeal was upheld, and the second yellow  being rescinded, Mason’s sending-off was quashed.

27 October 2008 - Moseley announces the return of Ollie Thomas

Moseley has secured the signature of Ollie Thomas who returns to the club from Cornish Pirates.

Thomas, Moseley’s record points scorer, moved to Cornwall to seek full-time rugby at the start of the 2007/08 season. Ollie played for every age group at Moseley from Mini to Colt to 1st XV before relocating to only the second club of his career.

His father Alan was on the wing during the ‘glory years’ of the 1970s. The move comes at a perfect time for Moseley have been actively seeking cover for a number of positions and as a proven performer in ‘Red and Black’ Ollie fits the bill.

12 June 2008 - ADAM WHITNEY EXPANDS MOSELEY’S WELSH CONNECTION

Moseley Rugby Club’s squad for next season has been strengthened by the signing of back row forward Adam Whitney from Welsh Premiership side Cardiff.
where in his debut season he scored four tries in his 30 appearances.

He burst into the Welsh Premiership when he joined Bridgend in 2005 (from The Ospreys Academy) scooping ‘player of the month’ for the league in November.
By the end of the season he had sufficiently impressed to be nominated for the 2005/06 Premiership Best Newcomer Award. Moseley Head Coach Ian Smith said “the signing of Adam gives the squad another genuine no. 7 with pace and power and provides more options in the back row”. (Profile)

04 June 2008 - Muldowney moves to Moseley

Moseley Rugby Club is pleased to announce the recruitment of 6’5” lock forward Alastair “Aly” Muldowney from Stourbridge RFC where he was Player of the Season last year after appearing in all the club’s National League Two fixtures.

Ally joined Stourbridge from junior side Stafford in 2005 making seven starts for the 1st XV in the 2005/06 season. The following year his appearances increased to sixteen, and last season he played 26 games in National League Two scoring four tries. He also appeared for Staffordshire in this season’s County Championship.

Ally, 25 in August, came to rugby relatively late having played football until he was 13 and then basketball before eventually turning his hand to rugby when Stafford Colts were short. His aptitude for the game became quickly apparent and he was soon selected for the Stafford 1st XV. In his first full season he was awarded Stafford 1st XV ‘most improved player’ followed a season later by the 1st XV ‘Player of the Season’ award.

His performances last season at Stourbridge were described by seasoned forwards coaches as ‘outstanding’ and was recognised by his inclusion in the 2007/08 Birmingham Post “Midlands Rugby Select XV” alongside Moseley players such as Neil Mason and Nathan Bressington with the following citation:

“When it looked like Stour were going to go up and people were talking about which of their players would survive at a higher level everyone agreed Muldowney could cope. A good size for a second row with an excellent work rate and decent hands.”

Moseley Head Coach Ian Smith commented “We are delighted that Ally will be joining us and are sure he will cope well with the transition to the higher league and develop his undoubted potential with us. This further strengthens our squad for next season in another key area”. Profile

23 May 2008 - Moseley strengthens playing squad in key areas

Moseley is pleased to announce initial new signings in several key positions which will strengthen the squad for the 2008/09 season and the re-signing of several senior players from last season.

Former Leeds Carnegie fly half Richard Vasey strengthens the half back options, ex Bristol centre Andy Reay re-joins Moseley after a season with Newbury, and prop George Davis from Plymouth adds competition to the front row.Andy Reay in Red n Black action

Captain Neil Mason embarks on the second year of his contract with the club and is joined by senior members of the pack including England 7’s reserve James Rodwell, Canadian International Oliver Atkinson and England Counties 2nd row Paul Arnold.

Other re-signings in the backs include former Moseley captain Gareth Taylor who will be competing for the scrum half berth with Wales U 21 International James Ireland while Nathan Bressington adds experience and proven try scoring ability on the wing.

Further re-signings will be announced over the next few weeks.

Moseley Head Coach Ian Smith commented “We are delighted to announce the signing of these new players who will provide strength in depth in key positions and provide the team with more options”.

John Beale, Moseley Director Rugby added “The re-signing of senior experienced players also provides the base upon which to continue the club’s progress of the last five seasons.”

Note: Many others for various reasons, such as holidays etc, have agreed terms but contracts have not actually been returned. We anticipate that the majority of last season's squad will be playing for the club next season. We also anticipate being able to announce further signings to strengthen more key areas in the team.
