Dan Oselton - Hooker
The former England U18 and English Universities player scored a try in
the final of the ‘real’ Varsity match for Bath against Loughborough in
the 2005/06 BUSA (British Universities) Championship. In 2006/07 he
played for his home club Darlington scoring 3 tries in their National 3
North campaign.
Dan also represented Durham in 2006/07 when they won the County
Championship Plate. He made his debut for Moseley in the pre-season
friendly at Blackheath in August 2007.
Programme Profile: Daniel Oselton - Feb 2009
In the normal course of events club members and regular supporters do
not give
much thought to those members of the First XV Squad who, week after
week, sit on the bench as replacements. The amount of actual game time
they get depends on the form and fitness of the current incumbent of
their preferred position and, when they are called upon, they are
expected to play immediately at their very best. It can all be quite
frustrating.
Daniel Oselton, a hooker, is in such a situation. Adam Caves has played
in every game but one so far this season, so Daniel’s opportunities to
demonstrate his abilities to hit his man in the line-out, or when
hooking in the front row of the scrum, have been limited. Nevertheless,
he remains pleased to be with Moseley and confident that his time will
come.
In the course of his rugby career, during which he has been well
supported by his parents, Daniel has played for Darlington (1995-2003),
Newcastle ( 2000-01) and, when at the University of Bath, he played for
England Students and in the Welsh Premiership for Bedwas (2004-05). As a
youth, he also played for England U18. He joined Moseley at the start of
last season ,having come to the club’s notice during a match in 2007,
organised by Rob Sigley between an Invitation XV and Moseley’s Second
XV. Due to cartilage problems in both knees, Daniel had an unfortunate
start at Billesley Common. Thankfully, he is now fully fit again.
Daniel was brought up in the garrison town of Catterick in North
Yorkshire and was educated at Risedale College. From there he went
almost the full length of England to Bath University to read Educational
Coaching and Sports Performance, an ideal introduction to Moseley’s
city-wide coaching programme, which employs him during the week. He then
completed his degree in Sports Coaching & Conditioning at Hartpury
College.
Daniel lives in King’s Norton with his girl friend Hannah, whom he met
when they were students at University. Together they have travelled
extensively, notably in New Zealand. Even though he is a country man at
heart, Daniel has adjusted well to big city life and he and Hannah are
taking every opportunity to make full use of the facilities that
Birmingham has to offer.
Hannah is training to be a teacher in the School of Education at
Birmingham University. Daniel may well follow in her footsteps when his
rugby career draws to its close, with a view to becoming a sports coach
in a school. Outside rugby Daniel’s interests are in cricket, playing
for his local club at home, golf and the cinema. We wish them both well.
