Programme Profile: Adam Whitney - September 08

Rarely, if ever, has a young player joined Moseley with such an impressive track record; Captain of Wales U18;, nominated Welsh Premiership’s ‘Best Newcomer’ 2005/06; and established member of Cardiff’s team last season, runners-up in the Premiership. In recruiting Adam Whitney, Moseley Rugby Club has secured the services of an openside flanker of high class from the very heart of Welsh rugby.

Adam was born in Bridgend in September 1984, of a family of teachers, and was educated at Brynteg Comprehensive and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC) where he read Sports Coaching. He captained Brynteg School to win the Welsh Schools Cup in 2003. Adam represented Wales at U16, U18(as Captain) and U19 levels ( alongside the Moseley scrum half Jimmy Ireland), as well as representing Samurai 7s and Welsh Academicals (with the Moseley prop Nathan Williams).

Adam joined the Academy of Welsh Professional side, Ospreys but his big break occurred in 2005 when he was recruited by his home Welsh Premiership Club, Bridgend, where he soon won that league’s ‘Player of the Month’ award and was the highest scoring forward in that Premiership season. In his second season he was made captain, the youngest ever at the club.

Adam left Cardiff wanting a new challenge because of the growing realisation in Welsh rugby that the English National League One is now a more physical, competitive and unpredictable league than the Welsh Premiership (which is totally dominated by the top four sides) and his wish, with his architect girl friend Kirsty, to widen their horizons beyond Wales

Adam is a full time rugby professional. Apart from club and personal training he has joined Moseley’s large and successful schools coaching programme. When his rugby comes to its inevitable end, Adam hopes to remain in the sports coaching business, supplemented by nutrition & body conditioning expertise. To that end he hopes, to pursue a Master’s Degree in the near future in one of the city’s universities.

The club has provided Adam with a flat just off Broad Street which enables him .to see something of Birmingham’s night life in the raw! Unfortunately, Kirsty has not been able to get a job in the City in her field and is currently working in Bristol midweek. His main interests besides rugby are all sports, reading and travel but living in the city centre now provides him with the opportunity to taste and develop a wide variety of other interests.

Adam appreciates that, notwithstanding his track record, in joining Moseley he has to first make his mark on the training field and in league matches. Competition for a place in the back-row is now fiercer than it has been for years. It will be fascinating to watch the battle.
