SUPER MOSE ARE RED OT!

Ollie’s boot sees off relegation rivals  (Sunday Mercury)

MAGNIFICENT Moseley grabbed a National One lifeline with a nail-biting victory over fellow strugglers Otley.
The win, just their fourth of a difficult campaign, lifted them out of the relegation zone and gives them hope that their stay in the First Division will last longer than a single season.

Star of the show was Ollie Thomas whose outstanding kicking bagged him 20 points and his seventh goal not only padded the margin of victory but denied the visitors a crucial loss bonus.

The full back also produced a try saving tackle late in the game to deny Otley’s rampaging No 8 Matt Stockdale a match winning score.

The only kicks he missed were the two he struck from inside his own half, his first effort after four minutes and his penultimate late in the second period.

Otherwise he was peerless.

He put his side ahead in the 11th minute after Tom Skelding barged up the left wing and drew Otley offside. Two minutes later, however, the hosts were behind as the visitors Newcastle Falcons loanne Ollie Phillips counter attacked with Tommy Hayes loose clearance. The wing was downed on the 22 but then Stockdale spun through Ben Buxton’s attempted tackle and raced under the posts.

Blocked Jon Benson’s conversion made it 7-3 to the Yorkshiremen. Thomas narrowed the gap to a point on the quarter hour mark when Hayes forced Otley offside but three minutes after that Phillips was blocked as he chased his own kick and Benson made it 10-6. The former Doncaster fly half made it 13-6 just after the half hour when Neil Mason entered a ruck illegally.

Thomas rounded off the half with two more penalties to cut Otley’s lead to 13-12 at the interval.

He gave his side a lead they would not lose six minutes after the restart when the visitors were penalised for illegal use of the boot.

The game was held up for more than ten minutes when Nathan Bressington suffered a neck injury and although he was carried off the pitch his condition is not thought to be serious.

Once play resumed a Ben Fear punch gave Moseley another penalty which Thomas boomed over for 18-13.

Moseley looked dominant and, having laid waste to the Otley lineout, there looked no way back for the troubled northerners.

They were awarded an attacking throw-in at the end of regulation time and, although Moseley looked stretched, Kyle Dench tossed what should have been the scoring pass behind his winger. A minute into added time they came back into the game, though. Moseley infringed as James Aston tried to run the ball out of his own 22 and Benson stepped up to cut the deficit to two points. That led to a nervy finish for the hosts. Stockdale broke three tackles before Thomas hauled him down and then eight minutes into added time the youngster missed a penalty that would have made the game safe. It did not matter with Otley pinned back to their own line the Moseley front row took a scrum against the head from which James Rodwell bashed over. Thomas added the extras to complete the satisfying victory.
