1ST XV - EDF Trophy Winners 2009

Moseley has historically been one of the leading Clubs in the British Isles, winning the Anglo Welsh pennant as top team on occasions, particularly during the 1970’s, and regularly provided players to International, regional and County sides since its founding in 1873.

When leagues were first introduced into England in the 1980/90’s Moseley was of course included in the top flight. By 1996 however, the Club’s playing strength had slipped and, then playing in the second tier, was not included in the first Premier League.

It is true to say that Moseley did not embrace professionalism well and this caused a further slip to the third tier in England by 2003. However this was rapidly reversed in 2006 with promotion as champions back to National Division One, which becomes the new Championship for 2009/10. This means that on any given Saturday our first XV brings one of the top 12 rugby matches in the country to our Birmingham home.

2009/10 also heralds the inaugural year of the British and Irish Cup, with many great names from cross-border battles of the past potentially returning to Birmingham. Having won the EDF National Trophy at Twickenham in 2009, Moseley will find the opposition particularly keen to "beat the Cup-Holders".

Since the repurchase of the Club by its members in 2002, the team is rapidly rebuilding for a return to it's former place among the very highest echelons of the game. The squad, always playing attractive rugby, always includes a good proportion of players who have come up through the youth development teams.
