Community Activities Report February Half term 2009

Half Term at Billesley was ‘Brilliant’!

Once again Moseley Rugby club ran extensive activities over half term.

Five days of rugby activities over half term attracted 140 boys (and a couple of girls) from clubs and schools across the Greater Birmingham region.

Monday – Kicking Clinic
Monday attracted close to 30 boys to a kicking clinic run by 1st XV players Richard Vasey and Ollie Thomas.

The organiser, Richard Webb, received a number of compliments about this activity with one young lad describing it as ‘brilliant day’!

Tuesday to Friday – Under 9s to 15s

On the Tuesday and Wednesday 60 boys from under 9s, 10s, 11s, 12s and 13s were coached by Ben Buxton, Paul Cox, Ollie Thomas and Adam Whitney.

The 14s and 15s visited Billesley on Thursday and Friday and were coached by 1st XV players Paul Arnold, Dan Oselton, Nathan Williams and Richard Vasey.

The weather was kind and the extensive development programme stretched all the attendees.

Rugby is unique, in as much that professional players are quite often found coaching young people. There are not many other sports where this is the case. Greater Birmingham is extremely fortunate in having many of the Moseley professional players coaching the age group teams.

This has reflected in the increase of young players from throughout Birmingham being selected for representative squads such as North Midlands, Midlands and England over the past few years.

All agreed that the programmes were well worth attending and many asked if there would be more of the same running in the future – well the answer is ‘YES’!

Look out for details of further development camps during the Easter holidays which will be highlighted on the Moseley website www.moseleyrugby.co.uk the club newsletter Moseley Matters (free subscription details on the club website) and the local press.

Community Day – Saturday 1st November
Adults introduction to touch rugby – bring your children also!

We are running a ‘community day’ on Saturday 1st November, prior to the first team game against Esher.

Amongst the activities on offer on that day will be the opportunity for adults to come along and join in with playing touch rugby. Groups of friends, workmates or individuals can attend, be placed into teams and participate in a ‘round robin’ competition, on the rubber crumb pitch. Afterwards stay on and watch the first team game, enjoying a pint and a bite to eat from the clubhouse.

This follows on from our successful summer touch league, the players from which will also be invited to join in. Touch rugby is a game where both complete novices and experienced rugby players, male and female, can join together and have an enjoyable time playing a game that is easy to learn. There is no contact, no scrums, lineouts, rucking or mauling. Just a running and passing game on small pitches, with no more than seven players in each team.

We will be extending an invitation to the local community, Moseley members, sponsors, business community, in fact to anybody who wishes to turn up and play (as long as they pre-register).

For those with children, we will run alongside the adult touch rugby activities for children up to 11 years, where they can participate in a wide variety of different sports on the day. Come along as a family.

Participants are asked to attend the clubhouse by 12.30pm. Activities will finish in time to get into the clubhouse for refreshments. Anybody interested must pre-register via email : community@moseleyrugby.co.uk or by calling me at the club office. - Richard Webb, Community Department

2008 - Weekly Activities at Billesley:-

In addition to the holiday programmes, local children are invited to participate in a multi sports activity every Wednesday between 4pm and 6pm, when they can enjoy a number of sporting activities including tag rugby and soccer (on the rubber crumb pitch) indoor hockey, tennis and boxing (in the tennis centre) and netball (in Swanshurst School sports hall). All local children are invited to attend. Two of the Moseley coaches will be leading on the tag rugby and soccer programmes. Children should report to the tennis centre by 4pm each week.

For the older children we are shortly starting a ‘street soccer’ programme, when children between 11 and 16 years of age can go along to play 5-a-side soccer on the rubber crumb pitch. Just turn up and play. Once again this programme runs between 4pm and 6pm each Wednesday.

These programmes are run in partnership between Moseley Rugby Club, Billesley Extended Services and Selly Oak constituency. The programmes were initiated by Moseley Rugby Club, when West Midlands Police provided a small amount of funding to start the programmes last Summer. These sessions were intended for the local community,, to give the local youth of the area the opportunity to experience the facilities at the club and to be coached by the young professional players. This has proved a huge success with approximately fifty children attending each week. As well as a great opportunity for local youngsters to have a fun time, the impact on crime and disorder has been quite significant. Inspector Paul Minor head of Billesley Police has stated that levels of crime and disorder have significantly dropped since we started these programmes.

Anybody requiring further information can contact Richard Webb on 07960 450 874
