February 2006 - Moseley to help Leicester celebrate milestone
Moseley will be renewing a long-standing rivalry with Leicester in February 2006 when they help them celebrate a major milestone. On Monday 6 February, a Moseley XV will play a Leicester Tigers XV at Welford Road (7pm k.o.) as part of the Leicester club’s 125th anniversary celebrations.
The Leicester club was formed in 1880 from an amalgamation of three local clubs and their first fixture was against Moseley who had been formed some seven years before. Moseley were already playing in their famous red and black strip and lined up against a Leicester team that played in black and were known as the ‘Death or Glory Boys’.
The match was played at the Belgrave Cricket and Cycle Ground and ended in a 0 - 0 draw. Since then the teams have had many great encounters, including the John Player Cup Final in 1979 which Leicester won narrowly, 15-12 with a try three minutes from the end.
