Relegation: 11th and 12th placed clubs down, 10th placed club played club placed 3rd in National Division 2 and 9th placed club played club placed 4th in National Division 2 in two-legged play-offs for National Division 1 status for 1997/98.

Champions: Wasps.

Relegated: West Hartlepool and Orrell.

Promoted from National Division 2: Richmond and Newcastle.
