Match Report

Birmingham Mail

The team that couldn’t score finally did so and the side that couldn’t win finally won as Moseley ended their two-month wait for victory.

Despite themselves Kevin Maggs’s men saw off a spirited challenge from Scottish Premiership outfit Gala to take control of Pool Six of the British & Irish Cup.

Not that it was a pretty affair. No, don’t be mistaken into thinking that for a second. Four points it may have been but this was as ugly as a bull terrier in a car crash and a game that should have been settled in 40 minutes was made to stretch the distance.

That’s because tortured Moseley have to manufacture ten scoring opportunities to convert just one and whenever they approach the opposition 22 the players who got them there seem to forget even the most basic tenets of the game.

Indeed, Moseley had very few problems advancing the ball up the field but once they got within striking distance their hands turned to stone, their legs to jelly and their set-piece to.... well, let’s just say their lineout and scrum didn’t assert themselves in the red zone.

As a result they somehow found themselves 13-0 down after half-an-hour, despite the fact Gala had failed to produce a single piece of possession in the opposition 22. That fact was true of the whole match and though it took the hosts until the last minute to score the decisive points, that says more about Moseley’s sloppiness than it does Gala’s resolve, fearsome though the latter was.

But, in truth, while the Scots could teach their hosts plenty about maximising scoring opportunities, on the balance of territory and possession they made little impact.

What they did do was prey on the plentiful anxieties of Maggs’s men, anxieties that were especially apparent during the first 40 minutes when Mose attacked almost without deviation. Almost.

There were three exceptions, two of which led to Lee Millar penalties and one to a well-executed, but from Mose’s point of view farcical, try for Gavin Young.

By contrast, for the first 50 minutes Moseley attacked with all the dexterity of a blind man in boxing gloves so the feeling of relief when the excellent Billy Robinson found a way through was palpable.

That gave Maggs’s side enough evidence they could go on to win, which they did through Danny Herriott’s try, Glyn Hughes’s penalty and the latest of drop goals.
