Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Money can buy most things, international rugby players chief amongst them, but it’s the qualities that can’t be measured that saw Moseley continue their barely believable hoodoo over Bristol.

For the second time this season Kevin Maggs men afforded the Men from the Mem a potentially decisive head-start, 14-0 inside the first quarter, and for the second time they reeled them in and surpassed them.

But that wasn’t because they passed better, ran faster or jumped higher, but simply because they worked harder and wanted it more.

Tries in each half from Sam Dickinson and Buster Lawrence, converted by Ollie Thomas, who also kicked three penalties, provided the points but the main message from last night was that to win rugby matches you have to be prepared to dig deeper than is comfortable.

It was a distinction Maggs was quick to draw.

“We had the things you can’t buy,” the head coach beamed. “Heart, togetherness and determination, we had them in abundance. We have been unlucky at times this year but we’ve always had it in us.

“It is about the players believing that and backing each other up.”

But to be fair, Bristol might have won had they not had a third try pulled back for a forward pass.

The visitors started at a gallop and nicked a soft try after ten minutes when Ryan Glynn was stripped of the ball by wing Ryan Edwards, who coasted 25 metres to the line unopposed.

Eight minutes later Ross Johnston scored from a lineout maul.

Tristan Roberts converted both but then looked aghast as his pass that released Luke Eves was called back. That inspired Mose and they dominated the remaining hour with their scrum and lineout well on top and their forwards battering the Bristol eight.

Dickinson ploughed over before the break, Thomas converted and added three penalties after it and then, with three minutes to go, Lawrence sprung through the fringes to make the game safe.
