Drop fears haunt Morse as ill-discipline dents chance to secure safety

Neil Mason admitted Moseley missed an opportunity to secure their Championship status as the Billesley side lost at home for the first time this year.

With Doncaster and Jersey having both been defeated on Friday night, Moseley went into yesterday’s match knowing a third win over Scottish this season would effectively guarantee their safety.

However, despite leading 20-18 with just nine minutes to go, a second Lewis Calder try gave the visitors victory and extended Moseley’s anxiety for at least another week.

They will now hope to guarantee an eighth successive second tier campaign when they face Leeds on Friday night – but they will need to show much cooler heads than they did yesterday.

Both Mason and Greg King were sent to the sin-bin and Mose haemorrhaged penalties in the second half as Scottish were allowed piggybacks up the hill.

And Mason identified that as the decisive factor. “Discipline was weak, two yellow cards in this league is the best part of ten, 15 or 20 points in a game,” the blindside conceded.

“From our point of view, me included, we got penalties against us and instead of letting them have the ball and leave the ruck alone, ill-discipline played a part in our game.

“At one point we were down in their 22, we had three consecutive penalties and then they ended up scoring off a driving maul.

“In this league we should know better – and we do know better – but obviously the red mist descended in players’ eyes and it’s hard to control that.”

The first half was a tight affair in which the lead changed hands three times, first when James Love made Ben Pons pay for stealing offside.

However, 30 seconds later, Mose winger Billy Robinson chased the kick-off and charged down the Exiles’ clearance before steadying himself to scoop up and score the simplest of tries.

Ollie Thomas converted and added a penalty in the tenth minute when Scottish were penalised for not rolling away near their ten-metre line.

Seven minutes later the visitors grabbed their first try after Moseley were pushed back to their own line by conceding a series of penalties against the Scottish maul.

They were powerless to prevent openside Calder riding a drive all the way over the line to cut the hosts’ lead to 10-8.

Soon after, Calder was penalised for going off his feet when Tom Warren had taken the ball up and Thomas harnessed the uphill breeze to stretch the advantage back to five points.

A quarter-of-an-hour before the break, home skipper Mason was sin-binned after infringing at a ruck on his own line and Oli Grove made it 13-11.

Then, just as Mason was preparing to come back on, Mose were turned over on their 22-metre line, Calder sneaked past Ryan Glynn, Grove appeared on his shoulder and Chevvy Pennycook took the centre’s flip-up over by the posts.

Former Bees and Worcester man Grove converted to give the Londoners an 18-13 lead at the interval.

With the slope in their favour, Mose expected to steamroller their way to another come-from-behind victory.

And, a quarter-hour in, it looked as though they might as the home team eschewed several shots at goal and opted for five-metre scrums.

Three times referee Simon Harding penalised the visiting pack for going to ground and, on the fourth, his patience ran out as he awarded a penalty try.

Thomas’s conversion gave his side a 20-18 lead and a platform to go on and dominate. But, to their credit, Scottish didn’t roll over. Another series of penalties backed Mose up to their own line, Scottish claimed a lineout and Calder was shunted over for a second, decisive score, which Grove converted.

The Billesley outfit had one final opportunity to win the game when they drove a lineout to within a few metres of the line but Mike Powell went on his own and spilled the ball forward and a couple of scrums later Harding blew his whistle for the final time.

Mose restored their lead over bottom- placed Doncaster to 11 points and, with three games to play, they should be safe.
