Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Storming comeback from Moseley not enough after gifting Leeds a runaway start

For 15 minutes Moseley resembled rabbits caught in floodlights as they gifted Leeds a bonus point victory inside a quarter of an hour at Billesley Common on Friday night.

They then spent the rest of a pulsating Championship encounter making up for that pathetic start as they whisked off 17 unanswered points to threaten to steal a bonus of their own.

And their magnificent second half performance would have brought it had Ollie Thomas not missed a late penalty that would have effectively guaranteed second tier safety.

It was a stark contrast to the first period as Moseley were sliced to pieces early on and Leeds built up a 26-3 advantage and the home defence was exposed as either to narrow or too brittle.

They opened their try count after just 90 seconds as scrum half Craig Hampson wriggled out of Anthony Carter’s tackle to stretch over by the sticks. Rory Clegg landed the first of his three conversions.

The hosts responded straight away as Carnegie fumbled the restart and after the excellent Sam Dickinson and centre Greg King had made inroads into the 22 and forced Leeds lock Dom Barrow to kill the ball. Thomas kicked the points for 7-3.

But it was only a momentary relief as a long Clegg pass put Steve McColl outside Billy Robinson for a slick try.

Then in the tenth minute the Yorkshiremen flew out of their own 22 only for Ryan Burrows to be halted by Dickinson.

But as defenders poured back Clegg identified prop Ethan Waller, burst away from him and fed full back McColl for his second touch down in just a few seconds.

The fourth came from a scrum in the 15th minute as centre Josh Griffin careered straight past Ollie Robinson for an embarrassing first phase score.

Moseley came into after that but 23 points down they were obliged to go for the corner with several kickable penalties only for their lineout to misfire as they lost three promising positions in quick succession.

But Mose emerged transformed men to turn the game on its head as they monopolised territory and possession.

After six minutes Ryan Glynn took quickly and caught the defence on the back foot to scuttle home for his second try in Red and Black.

Thomas converted. Moseley continued to press and had several chances before Dickinson capped a superb individual display and Thomas’s extras made it 26-17.

And then with ten minutes to go Thomas kicked the penalty that put his team in bonus point territory.

However, one last attack from Leeds created a penalty for Clegg which he stuck mercilessly between the sticks to deny Mose anything for their endeavours.
