Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Moseley got the point they needed to guarantee Championship rugby next season – but they left Clifton Lane thinking they should have had more

Yesterday's loss bonus cancelled out the one Doncaster picked up in Jersey and, as a result, it is the Knights who slip into National One.

But the Billesley Common outfit let a winning position slip as they started and finished well but allowed Rotherham’s more consistent set-piece to dictate in the middle two quarters.

That and kicker James McKinney, who was perfect with six attempts, proved the difference between the sides as Glyn Hughes struggled to master the wind and was wide with four of his seven shots.

While skipper Mike Powell admitted Mose had missed out on a victory, he was at least happy they had secured their second tier status.

“Days like this you try to not let it affect you but it’s a massive thing for us,” the second row said.

“Our main thing now is to try to finish ahead of Jersey. Our season is not finished, we have got one game left and, as is the same at every club, some people will be leaving at the end of the year and we want to make sure we put in a big performance.”

They put in half a performance here. After building up an early ten-point lead Moseley then lost control of the match as Titans scored 26 points with only seven coming against the tide.

Olly Robinson’s try ten minutes from the end brought Mose close again but they were unable to close the gap against a side that had also played on Wednesday.

In stark contrast to their last game when they were a try down in two minutes, Moseley made an excellent start and were ten points up after eight minutes,

The first try came from Hughes in the fifth minute but Brad Hunt thought he’d opened the scoring after just two minutes.

A series of turnovers, as Rotherham were found light at the breakdown, took Mose from their own 22 deep into Roth territory and Hunt found his way across the line after an off-load by Anthony Carter. Unfortunately for the Welshman, his pass bobbled forward before Hunt scooped it up and the ‘try’ was wiped off.

Not that it took long to rectify. Rotherham blown up for a free-kick at a five-metre scrum and play moved to the Mose right where Billy Robinson was driven over the gain-line. That created space for Hughes in midfield and he dummied between Ted Stagg and Gareth Denman to reach out under the bar. The fly half picked himself up and landed an easy conversion for 7-0.

A couple of minutes later the advantage was into double figures as Roth infringed at a ruck and Hughes punished them for 10-0.

Titans responded as the quick-silver Charlie Mulchrone broke off the back of a lineout and set in motion an attack that was only ended when Sam Dickinson went off his feet. James McKinney cut the arrears by three.

The hosts levelled on the quarter- hour after Rotherham won an attacking lineout and, although they found no space down the Mose left, centre Eamonn Sheridan spotted Carter creeping out of the defensive line and powered his way through the gap and over. McKinney’s conversion made it 10-10.

The irresistible Dickinson surged up to the home 22 and Hughes sliced through again only to see what would have been a scoring off-load to Olly Robinson deliberately knocked on by former Mose man Ed Styles.

The full back was sin-binned but Hughes was wide with a kickable penalty and McKinney made the Leeds-bound half-back pay on the half hour when Carter was penalised for slowing the ball down.

Despite their positive start, Mose trailed 13-10 at the break.

McKinney stretched the lead to six soon after the restart before Ben Pienaar plunged over from short range for a converted score that gave Mose the edge in the 45th minute.

However, McKinney kicked a penalty and converted a penalty try that meant Robinson’s well-worked score was worth one point and not all four.
