Thanks to "Watcher" for the following report.

This was a useful work-out even though there were only 23 players in the squad and the backs especially were very thin on the ground with only one replacement on the bench and only one outside back - Bressington - back from last year.

Missing, who we could reasonable expect to be playing in the side this season included Reay (injured), Keys and Mensah Coker (in Canada awaiting work permits), Jonnie May (required elsewhere) and Ben Jones (pre arranged US trip). Andy Hall was away at his brothers' wedding. There were no dual registered players or loan players playing at all (apart from Tristan Roberts).

The make-shift centre partnership was fly half Borgen and young ex Moseley Colt McBurnie. Naturally the backs, having never played together before were a bit disorganised defensively with new full back Thirlby and experienced Bressington missing crucial tackles and out wide seemed the prime route for Newport's scores. However Thirlby did look good when attacking with some useful runs from full back. Borgen was committed and skilful and McBurnie showed some good touches in attack when making a couple of excellent breaks.

Our pack was the starting Cup Final one with Pennycook in for Bignall at no 7 (and he showed some good touches and should be able to improve his link play as he settles in more) but overall they looked a bit rusty. Coaches had this line up playing for 60 minutes before various subs came on. Maybe they were trying to tell them something or were just allowing them to get rid of the rustiness!

Before then our scrummage was clearly superior and most of our line out was secure but perhaps slightly different interpretations on offside around rucks and mauls often resulted in slow ball which provided little space for our backs. Thus Rodders did not have any space off the back of the scrum and was relatively quiet in the loose for him. Despite this a good passage of play in the second half with a number of forward phases and then a backs move finished off by Thirbly showed what could be done.

Substitutes around the 60 minute mark brought a bit of renewed vigour into the play. Mark Evans was prominent. George Davis kept the scrummage pressure on and Harry Rowland (no 7) showed some useful touches and commitment. Elliot Reed on for Tristan showed some good touches too. The scrum was not demonstrably weaker when Dan Oselton came on again at 60 minutes but he had had a bit more to do as he also came on for Adam Caves for ten minutes in the first half when the ref considered that Adam and one his opposing props needed to take a breather and cool down a bit!).

The game could have been won by either side but a bit more of a cutting edge in a more settled Moseley would have seen us well clear. There is no substitute for match practice though and although there is plenty to work on, with so many players available soon, this was a useful work out and encouraging. The welcome by Newport supporters was very friendly and it was good to renew the fixture and be among the town's good rugby people again.
