Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Moseley thrashed by Rotherham for the second time in three weeks

If the bad news for Moseley is they were routed by rampant Rotherham for the second time in three weeks, the good news is they don’t have to play the Titans again until February.

That is about the only consolation to be taken from another disheartening hammering at the hands of a club Moseley have traditionally measured themselves against.

But having been beaten by the men from Clifton Lane in their last six meetings the only comparisons between the sides are unfavourable to the Red and Blacks.

Indeed the margin is only growing and having already thrashed Mose 42-24 in the first match of the season, Rotherham managed one more try and seven more points yesterday. And Titans didn’t even play as well as they had at Castle Park.

Once again points machine Juan Pablo Socino was instrumental in the carnage. The Argentine centre wasn’t as rampant through midfield as he had been in curtain-raiser but he still laid on one try and kicked 22 points, with eight successes from 11 attempts.

To rub salt in the wound there was a try for ex-Mose lock Dan Sanderson, who played his part of pantomime villain to a tee with a cheeky celebration and second half yellow card.

And the visitors’ final score, when Ali Birch intercepted Chris Brightwell’s flick at the base of a scrum, was probably the most embarrassing of all.

Mose have now conceded 123 points in just three matches and only their dramatic draw at Plymouth is keeping them off the bottom of the table.

They are amassing more points, two Rhys Buckley tries and 11 kicked by Ollie Thomas came yesterday, but they are simply too easy to score against.

Especially early on. For all their pre-match talk about starting well, it proved to be worth nothing as Alex Woolford knocked on the opening kick-off.

Forty seconds later they donated a penalty to the Rotherham cause and Socino’s first duty of the day was to accept a simple three points.

To be fair Mose actually responded well and an Olly Robinson turnover and an inviting pass from Anthony Carter gave Buster Lawrence and Matt Williams the chance to test the defence.

It held firm, far firmer than Moseley’s a couple of minutes later when it was put under strain by Scott Armstrong’s ill-judged one man counter attack.

Socino hammered the winger back into his own territory and Rotherham whipped play right where Sanderson, James Broadley and Dallan Murphy maintained momentum.

Charlie Mulchrone dummied through the thin fringes and scampered over from 30m. Socino’s conversion took the lead into double figures.

But then the referee’s whistle proved the main arbiter of events for the next half hour, interesting given the fact it belonged to former Moseley fly half Greg McDonald.

The official adjudged Rotherham had blocked at the next restart and Thomas stroked over his first points.

He and Socino traded penalties and then on 26 minutes Simon Hunt, replacing Mike Penn at full back, burst across halfway and through two tackles.

Roth were harshly penalised contesting for the ball and Thomas added another three to cut Titans’ lead to 13-9.

But the visitors weren’t done and in the final eight minutes Rotherham added another 11 points.

And once again Mose gifted them as Sanderson stole their lineout in midfield. His side showed good continuity and pushed the hosts back to their own line.

The second row then finished the move by bashing through two tackles to touch down from 5m.

Mose’s Buckley was yellow carded at a ruck soon after and against 14 men Socino added two more penalties to give his side a two score, 24-9 advantage at the interval.

The match was effectively decided immediately after the resumption when Titans attacked with the kick off and Socino broke through the first line of defence.

The former Dax man waited for Jack Roberts to appear on his shoulder and put his centre partner away.

Then Mose staged what looked to be a meaningful comeback as Buckley returned from the sin bin and was driven over from a lineout.

Then two minutes later the hooker burrowed over after a break by Sam Brown and Olly Robinson. Thomas converted for 31-21.

But Mose got no closer and two more penalties and late tries from Broadley and Birch gilded the scoreline and left Moseley pointless for the second week in three.
