Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Improved performance not enough for Moseley to leave Cornwall with the points

Moseley turned in arguably their best and certainly their most committed performance of the season so far, yet still left Cornwall empty handed.

The Duchy has not been a happy hunting ground for Mose in recent seasons and even though this must be viewed as a step forward after several no-shows this term, they were given a lesson in taking chances.

The visitors created as many openings as their hosts but didn’t look after the ball and ended up only taking one.

While the half-time scoreline suggested Moseley had made yet another poor start, in truth Pirates’ 15-3 lead was a testament to their clinical finishing and not complete superiority.

If anything Moseley had as much possession and position as their hosts but once again they were ruthlessly punished for some of their plentiful mistakes.

Mose should have been 3-0 up inside as many minutes after the indomitable Neil Mason won a penalty when Tom Riley failed to roll away. Unfortunately for the visitors, Ollie Thomas started what was to be his poorest game this season with a missed shot at goal.

On nine minutes, Riley made amends when Thomas failed to find touch, Aaron Carpenter counter- attacked into the 22 and Craig Holland poked a kick in goal for his centre to reach first.

Thomas cut the deficit to 5-3 on the quarter hour following a good carry by Cory Hill.

Three minutes later Moseley’s line-out, which functioned much better than it had in previous weeks, coughed a ball 10m out and Jack Andrew was driven over.

And on the half hour Riley took Junior Fatialofa’s midfield off-load 40m to beat Alex Day to the line. Sinclair had missed all three conversions but it didn’t look like it would matter.

But, as has become their custom, Moseley made an excellent start to the second period and within three minutes had finally crossed for their first try.

Hill broke the line, supported by Rhys Buckley and eventually, with Scott Armstrong sniping off his wing, they crashed through. Thomas’s conversion dragged Mose to within five.

And the fly-half added a penalty on the hour mark when Maggs might have preferred his men to go for an attacking lineout since Pirates had Alex Cheesman and Aaron Carpenter in the sin-bin. The Billesley outfit were to pay for their conservatism when Kieran Hallett landed two penalties and converted a Mike Pope kick and chase try for 28-13.
