Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Billesley outfit overcome bottom-of-the-table side to open up seven-point cushion

After eight weeks of looking Moseley finally found a way to win with an uncompromising victory in the Battle of the Basement.

A try in each half from Sam Brown and Greg King ensured the visitors never allowed the Ealing genie to escape the bottle – and with a quarter of the Championship season gone, 11th-placed Mose now have a handy seven-point buffer at the bottom of the table.

Ealing’s winless run goes on and this defeat hurt them all the more given the fact Moseley have started to cut them adrift.

Moseley had a stronger set piece in the first half and used it to carve out promising positions.

But they were only able to convert one into a try, a rare strike on the half hour from Sam Brown.

With their maul working well Mose rumbled into the 22 before Brown took an off-load down the exposed short side and scooted behind the sticks for the period’s only touch down. Will Hooley converted.

By that time Mose had taken a third minute lead through a Hooley penalty after home fly half Ben Ward was yellow carded for a deliberate knock on.

That advantage was short-lived, though, and two minutes later Brown’s shallow up-and-under put all of his forwards offside and Tom Wheatcroft accepted the three-point gift.

The final play before the interval saw Mose illegally drop a maul which allowed Wheatcroft to cut the deficit to 10-6.

The score which gave the visitors breathing space came just 50 seconds after the restart after Cory Hill made a searing break up to the Ealing 22.

Possession was moved left where King ignored support outside him to burst through two tackles and barge his way over from 25m.
