Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Moseley's great form continues with a stunning triumph at Goldington Road

Magnificent Mose and their Flying Machine marched over Bedford to record their third consecutive Greene King IPA Championship victory.

Not since the autumn of 2009, when they beat Doncaster, Coventry and Plymouth, have the Red and Blacks won three regular season league matches in succession.

Not since 1983 have they won at Goldington Road, according to club sources - and rarely, if ever, have they scored a try of such impudent brilliance as the one Matt Williams produced in the second half.

An hour had gone, his side led 18-13 when the winger collected Brendan Burke's bobbling clearance on his own 10m line. Boxed in and nowhere to go the only option was to launch and chase an up and under. Or so everyone else thought.

Instead the 25-year-old tip-toed his way between a defender and the sideline, stepped inside and through the next tackler and then stiff-armed a third before burning his way over the line.

It was so scintillating it made his 80m efforts in Doncaster and Plymouth look routine. It more than made up for his horrendous fumble of the second period kick-off. No wonder Kevin Maggs is given to calling him his Special Talent.

Indeed it had to be a remarkable try to trump the one scored in the first half by Buster Lawrence, the sort second rows, not even converted from No. 8, simply don't score.

Mose trailed 10-3, after Neville Edwards's eighth minute opener and a penalty and conversion from Jake Sharp, when Neil Mason flipped a pass off the deck to Lawrence.

The youngster jinked and then powered his way 40m to the posts for Caolan Ryan to add a conversion to his earlier penalty and level the half-time score at 10-10.

To be fair to Bedford they had much more possession and territory in the second half but still only managed a single Sharp penalty following Williams's gaffe.

Almost instantly Moseley responded with a powerful lineout drive which saw Rhys Buckley ride a maul over for his fourth of the season.

Ryan added a second penalty for 18-13 and then Williams scorched his work of art into the retina.

Blues responded with redoubled huffing puffs but the Moseley line held firm, indeed Ryan made sure there would be no loss bonus with a 74th minute penalty after Michael le Bourgeois knocked on and then infringed at the next breakdown.

In truth Moseley will feel the bonus point should have been theirs' but on occasions such as this, when one's seen a masterpiece, one shouldn't be too churlish and complain about the frame.
