Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Maggs praises flying first half display

Kevin Maggs hailed a job well done as his Moseley team seized their first British & Irish Cup win of the season and did so thanks to several impressive performances from fringe players.

Fly half Scott Browne made a very positive impression on his full debut and Joe Carpenter proved he could be ready for Championship action following his summer move from DK.

And with barnstorming displays from regulars Buster Lawrence and Chris Brightwell - who bagged two tries - Mose were convincing victors.

Particularly in the first half when the hosts set the foundations by roaring into an 18-3 interval lead.

“It was a very good first half,” Maggs said. “I would have liked a bit more in the second but a few of the boys got a little tired because they haven’t played that much.

“Overall I am pleased, it would have been nice to have got the other try for a bonus point but there were some really good performances which will put pressure on first team places. Scott did very well but so did Joe Carpenter, Stef Thorp and Nigel Burrows and that’s very good for competition in the squad.”

Mose made ten changes to the side that played in the Championship last week but you wouldn’t have known it as they brushed aside a callow Ealing line-up.

Browne put them 3-0 with a simple penalty in the fifth minute and the first try came in the 12th minute following a ruck on the visitors line from which Brightwell wriggled over.

Browne missed the touchline conversion but landed a second penalty midway through the period for 11-0. And then came the score of the night.

Greg King sneaked through a gap and laid off for Mike Powell who stepped out of a tackle and bullocked into the 22. Brightwell appeared on his shoulder and covered the remaining 20m and went under the sticks. Browne made it 18-0.

Tom Wheatcroft kicked Ealing’s first three points just before the break but his penalty was cancelled out by Browne’s third two minutes after the restart.

Mose looked as though they would pulverise their opponents as their scrum began to exert pressure which was rewarded with a well-deserved 50th minute penalty try.

Browne made it 28-3 but his extras were to be the hosts’ last points and Ealing had the last say when King fell off opposite number Chris Kinloch for a try converted by Wheatcroft.
