Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Maggs encouraged by late show

There are times when steam comes out of Kevin Maggs’s ears following a loss - and there are times like tonight when the Moseley head coach plays it cool for Ireland.

Despite seeing his team lose this British & Irish Cup match to improving Ealing, the ex-Irish international cut an unconcerned figure, content in the knowledge that when he added more senior players to his line-up, they delivered.

Two second half tries from Rhys Buckley and Greg King capped a much better final quarter showing and although Mose were unable to come back from 21-6 down, Maggs insisted he wasn’t that bothered.

“We left ourselves too much to do but we have got guys that have only played two games for us,” he said.

“We have had three narrow losses in this group and although we won last week, it’s always difficult mentally to come away from home. We had about five or six lads turn up late and it all impacts.

“But all credit to Ealing, they out-played us in the first half and when we made a few changes we won the second half. Is there a lot to be concerned about? Not really, I am happy with where we are at because it’s all about next week.”

Moseley started very positively. Semisi Taulava, on loan from Worcester as he comes back from a knee injury, marked his first touch by carrying two tacklers 10m.

His second was to force a penalty for holding on but unfortunately Scott Browne began what was to be an erratic performance by pushing his attempt right.

No matter, the fly half made amends in the seventh minute after Will Owen won a penalty for offside. Browne made it 3-0.

But from the resulting kick-off Owen was then pinged for holding on in his own 22 and Ben Ward levelled.

And just before the quarter hour the hosts worked their first try as Andrew Henderson slipped away from Browne and raced 20m to the flag. Ten minutes later Moseley crept up offside deep in their own territory and Ward added three points for 11-3.

Mose then wasted a golden opportunity when they were pushed off a 5m scrum and forced to stand up. Although Browne landed a penalty a few seconds later for 11-6 the momentum was with the Londoners.

On the half hour the excellent Sean O’Connell drew two tacklers and laid off for Ronnie McLean-Dents to scoot over in the right corner. Ward improved the score and with a 12-point deficit and a wobbly set-piece the visitors had it all to do in the second half.

They did some of it - but not until Ward had booted another three. Gradually Mose began to dominate physically and Buckley scored yet another mauled try.

But they had to wait until the last minute for King’s score for 21-18, by then it was too late.
