Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Moseley get fourth Championship win of the season

There was something for everybody in Moseley’s fourth Championship win of the season.

Lovers of slick handling and quality finishing were blessed to witness yet another Matt Williams long-range special – which fittingly proved the difference in the final analysis.

And in this season of festive excess, those who prefer the scrummaged exchanges of the tight five, well, they gorged themselves silly. When we say there was something for everyone, that doesn’t mean there were equal portions.

The disparity was never more pronounced than during an eight-minute, nine-scrum exchange that for all Williams’s fleeting pyrotechnics proved to be the decisive battle in the war.

Moseley clung on to their 10-3 lead in the shadow of their own sticks. The Jersey front row was seemingly ascendant.

And what unfolded was a vignette that for some was compelling but for others was the oval-ball equivalent of fingernails being dragged down a blackboard.

Scrum one ended as both teams stood up, Moseley were free-kicked for pushing early in scrum two; No.3 was reset without the ball, No. 4 saw both front rows upright again. Scrum five went the same way as the third, No.6 crabbed sideways and was rebuilt. Bored yet? Wait. Drama. On scrum seven Ben Evans was penalised for standing up. What a thrill.

Scrum eight hit the deck and then at the ninth time of asking, the ball went in, Moseley nudged the attacking team back and eventually referee Ross Campbell awarded a penalty to the home side for an illegal bind.

Boom, an explosion. Oh, cataclysmic ejaculations of relieved pressure. We thought we were going to burst. We’re spent, or at least those who love a scrum are.

For many the loss of a tenth of the game to a single restart will be time they will never get back. Time that might have been better spent Christmas shopping, cleaning the cooker, rearranging sugar granules. Anything.

There are those who wonder if the game of rugby union is well served by such elongated exchanges of second guessing and con-artistry. Personally I feel that it isn’t. I’d much rather see Williams haring up and down Billesley Common but as they say in Bristol, chacun a son gout.
