Match Report

By Brian Dick – Birmingham Mail

Moseley take a step back but go forward

It is a slightly irksome fact that Moseley end a year of undoubted progress with defeat at a venue where they won when they last visited 14 months ago.

Indeed, by the time Bristol had finished with Kevin Maggs’s 2013 model on Saturday evening, it was difficult to recall how Glyn Hughes and Charlie Hayter had inspired the 2012 version to that unlikely 22-21 victory.

This time the try-scoring fly-half, Nicky Robinson, wore Bristol blue and most, though not all, of the line-breaks were fashioned by the home side.

George Watkins also claimed a brace and there was even a try for Augustus Slowik, the Championship debutant of whose name Roald Dahl would have been proud.

Yet a result that on the face of it hinted at regression should not be allowed to obscure the fact Maggs has overseen a decent 12 months.

Bristol are undoubtedly better than they were in September last year and even if they waited for Moseley’s early storm to blow itself out, at least they were better equipped to weather it.

And whatever the scoreboard said here, Moseley are also better. Assuming no-one expects the Billesley outfit to challenge for promotion, the head coach has built a combative, enterprising first XV.

“We have won four games as opposed to two at this stage last year – there is a big improvement,” the head coach said afterwards.

The backs seem more balanced with Greg King at inside centre and Scott Armstrong outside him and the pack has enough ball-carriers to threaten most second-tier teams.

However, with their wealthy owner, international-pedigree coach and a squad that contains anyone west of the Severn Bridge who can walk and chew gum simultaneously, Bristol are not most second-tier teams. On this showing they are possible champions.

“When you look at the resources and budget they have got, and the size of their squad, really most people before the game would have taken keeping it to 29-8. But not us because we are better than that,” said Maggs.

And they might have proved it too had they been able to add a second try to Rhys Buckley’s tenth-minute mauled effort, and had Mike Powell not taken leave of his senses and been yellow-carded for a gratuitous maul offence.
