Match Report

By James Hewlett – Birmingham Mail

Moseley complete quest for survival

Moseley guaranteed Championship rugby for another season after a fine performance saw them return home with all the points after a five-try rout of Jersey.

Jersey, with relegation looming over them, never really got going and it was Moseley who scored first on ten minutes.

Good handling in the backs, who moved the ball well all game, led to full-back Anthony Carter breaking a couple of would-be tacklers and stretching over the try line. Ollie Thomas converted and the lead was well-deserved.

Both packs looked to assert dominance but despite early parity, it was Moseley who began to dominate in this area.

Despite this, some excellent handling and powerful running led to Jersey’s Grant Pointer finishing a length-of-the-pitch move to narrow the gap, and then they took the lead with a penalty.

The two sides wanted to move the ball on an excellent pitch in fine sunshine, but a mixture of desperate defending and some handling errors when well set denied both sides further tries.

Moseley finished the half the stronger and Thomas gave them a narrow 10-8 lead with a fine penalty after a Jersey infringement.

Moseley extended their lead almost from the resumption. Fine handling once more enabled Simon Hunt to run in the first of his tries in the right-hand corner. Thomas failed to convert but Moseley did not look back from this point.

With Jersey’s pack crumbling, Thomas extended the lead with a penalty and as pressure mounted, Jersey turned over a promising Moseley attack, but a horrendous flip pass on the five-metre line fell into the arms of Hunt for possibly the easiest try of his career. Thomas converted and Moseley led 25-8.

Jersey’s frustration was clear and back-row Latu Makaafi was sent off moments before another Hunt intercept try gave Moseley the bonus point.

A Jersey yellow card reduced them to 13 and this created the hole for Matt Williams to score in the corner as Jersey’s defence disintegrated.

Thomas glossed the result with a fine touchline conversion to leave the score 39-8 and move Moseley up to seventh in the table.
