Moseley Just Edge it After Both Sides See Red

Two tries from Scott Armstrong ensued MoseIey finished off their Pre-season with a victory over National One title challengers Ealing.

Scrum-half Dave Brazier also crossed for the Billesley Common outfit in a scrappy, and at times bad tempered, 'friendly', which unusually contained two red cards.

Ealing's hooker Alun Walker was sent off after 15 minutes for a reckless spear tackle on the diminutive Brazier but Moseley's numerical advantage didn't even last until half time after tighthead Simon Gardiner was dismissed for punching.

Referee Greg McDonald allowed both sides to field l5 players after the break but with substitutions and new combinations disrupting the flow, neither played anything near their best.

If anything it was the visitors who had the best of the opening period but they could only take one of several try scoring opportunities.

That came in the second minute when Phil Chesters scooted down the left wing to touch down in the corner for what was to be the only score of the half.

Moseley levelled after 51 minutes when Brazier nipped over on the back of a stalled catch and drive.

Four minutes later Ealing's Gary Johnson was sin-binned allowing Ollie Thomas to make it 8 – 5 with a penalty.

Ex-Northampton wing Armstrong scooped up a loose ball on the hour and raced 30m for what looked to be the decisive points.

But a late flurry in the final four minutes-with England U20 prop Danny Hobbs in the bin for killing the ball, saw Arthur Ellis ride a maul over to make it 13 – 10.

Armstrong capitalised on an error from the restart to stride through but on the final play Ealing’s James Copsey finished a 60m move as the best was saved until last.
