Match Report

By David Lawrence – Birmingham Mail

Moseley fly-half Ollie Thomas admitted the Billesley Common players were disappointed not to bag a bonus point from their trip to Sixways.

Worcester took the spoils and out-scored their visitors by three tries to one but it was part-timers Moseley who finished the stronger, scoring a late try and going close with a second in the dying stages.

“There’s a bit of disappointment because we do feel as though we left a point out there,” Thomas said.

“We thought we could come here and cause an upset – many Moseley teams have gone to ‘bigger’ clubs before and won. We think we are capable of taking points off most teams in this league.

“With a penalty here and a penalty there we felt as though we could have got a bonus point but it wasn’t to be.

“But we are pretty chuffed with the commitment and attitude we brought to the game. It was evident for everyone to see that we didn’t stop tackling right up to the last minute.

“The hunger is there from the boys who aren’t in the starting line-up, which means we can put everything we have into it for 60 minutes and then see what happens for the last 20 when the boys come on.”

It was one of those replacements who muscled in for Moseley’s try four minutes from time, hooker Scott Tolmie rounding off some excellent work from his forwards.

Caolan Ryan, on as a late replacement for Thomas, kicked the extras and moments later a storming run from wing-wonder Drew Cheshire almost led to a second score for the visitors.

There had been little to choose between the sides in a scrappy first half littered with handling errors.

Two Ignacio Mieres penalties and a try down the blindside from scrum-half Charlie Mulchrone steered Warriors into an 11-0 interval lead, while Thomas went close with two long-range penalties, the first rebounding off the crossbar.

Winger Tom Biggs had been binned for the visitors in the first half but second-half yellow cards for Moseley second-row Greg Charlton and full-back Anthony Carter were to prove decisive.

Mulchrone had crossed for his second try before the visitors were reduced to 14 men and the former Rotherham scrum-half capped an excellent display by feeding centre Ravai Fatiaka for a third Worcester try ten minutes from the end.

Moseley’s final flourish gave something for the travelling supporters to cheer and prompted words of praise from Warriors’ director of rugby Dean Ryan.

“It was a gutsy effort from a Moseley side who were on the back foot and full credit to them,” he said.
