Match Report

New Mose Winger Drew Cheshire is Quick on the Draw

Wing wonder Drew Cheshire celebrated his Moseley debut in style by helping the Billesley Common side to an opening-day draw.

And it proved a double delight for the former Luctonians favourite who was also celebrating his 24th birthday.

It looked like being a dismal day for his new team as their Channel Island visitors eased into a 19-3 lead with 20 minutes to go.

But inspired by Neil Mason’s converted try beneath the posts on the hour, Cheshire took centre stage with a score in the corner before muscling his way over for a second just in the nick of time, Ollie Thomas’ last-kick conversion tying the scores.

“I was hoping for a good performance and I’m happy to score two tries,” the Hereford-born winger said.

“Championship rugby is a bit faster and a bit more physical than playing for Luctonians and there’s not as much time on the ball. I put my head in where it shouldn’t be and I enjoy the contact.

“I try not to let pressure build up on me and try to do my thing out on the field. It was a big confidence boost and I will try and kick on again next week.

“I scored 22 tries last season and I’d like to better that but we had a lot more games last season than we get in the Championship. Everyone always wants to target one a game so that’s got to be the target to start with. If things don’t go that way then I’ll reassess but it’s good to have a long-term goal in place.”

Handling errors and a disappointing lineout and scrum hindered Moseley for the opening hour and after an early Thomas penalty, Jersey took charge with Tommy Bell’s three penalties easing them into a 9-3 interval lead.

They strengthened their grip in the second half thanks to another Bell penalty and a converted Nick Haining try.

But that proved just the appetiser to a tasty Moseley fightback. Yellow cards for hooker Martin Garcia-Veiga and impressive back-row Ryan Hodson did not help the Islanders’ cause but it was Cheshire who capped it all off in style.

Moseley head coach Kevin Maggs said: “Drew has done very well. He is strong and quick and can make things happen. It is early days and he has shown glimpses.”
