Match Report

By Brian Dick – the Rugby Paper

Carnegie made to work after second half implosion.

Yorkshire Carnegie coach Gary Mercer has promised an internal inquiry and ‘new Protocols' after his team's indiscipline nearly cost them victory at Billesley Common.

The Kiwi watched in horror as three of his men saw yellow and lock Nathan Hannay was sent off for an alleged head butt.

As a result Carnegie played virtually the entire final quarter with only 13 men and they nearly paid the price as Moseley came back from 29-15 down to within a point.

Indeed a Scott Tolmie try five minutes from the end gave Sam Olver the chance to put the dogged home team ahead but his conversion to slipped agonisingly past the left upright.

Yorkshire went back up the hill where Harry Leonard kicked his fifth Penalty for a personal haul of 17 Points, but pleased as he was to escape Birmingham with a victory, Mercer was vexed by the narrowness of the margin.

"At one stage we were cruising away and things were going weII then unfortunately a little bit of Indiscipline from a couple of boys meant it ended up being a dog-fight, which was disappointing," Mercer said.

"But I can't fault the boys’ effort that was certainly there when we were down to 13 men.

"That's something we are going to speak about - that's unacceptable. We can't afford to do that and allow teams like Moseley back into the game.

"l'll wait to see them on tape but Hannay will probably get some matches for that. l asked for aggression but unfortunately we weren't able to control it. That's disappointing and something we'll sort out.

"I think there might be new protocols going into place over the next couple of weeks."

His review will also show how adroitly David Mcllwaine finished off his l5th minute score and how his defence denied Moseley a couple of sure-fire first half tries.

Instead all Mose had to show for an excellent opening 40 was four Caolan Ryan penalties and a 14-12 deficit.

After the restart Carnegie made them pay for having Simon Gardiner binned when Chris Walker and Liam Edwards struck. Leonard put his side two tr
