Match Report

By Paul Smith – Birmingham Mail

Kevin Maggs' kids deliver a first win for Moseley

Moseley’s lowly position in the financial food-chain of semi-professional rugby condemns Kevin Maggs to an endless trawl through the lower leagues in search of untapped potential.

The side which delivered his team’s first victory of the season against Nottingham was the product of scouting missions to the sport’s hinterlands like Dudley, Stourbridge, Avonmouth and Barking.

There were even a few examples of that rugby rarity - the homegrown player, with Dave Brazier, Caolan Ryan and Jack Lea all contributing to what was a committed and commendable performance.

Indeed special mention goes to Colt hooker Lea who at just 19 years old must surely be breaking some kind of health and safety regulation, especially when his props offered him so little help at the scrummaging coal-face.

Nevertheless, the youngster, son of former Mose hooker Craig, emerged unscathed and with his reputation enhanced having spent nearly an hour battling former London Irish No. 2 Shaun Malton.

He was only pipped for man of the match honours by the indefatigable Joe Carpenter, a squat Dudley Kingswinford product with the classic openside skill-set. The 26-year-old puts his head where it hurts – and it often does.

“I wish the Championship was full of players with his attitude,” said Maggs. “You have got to like his attitude and how much he wants to succeed.”

Indeed, Carpenter gilded his excellent display with a first-half try, immediately after Nottingham full-back Conor Bullivant had been red-carded for a tip tackle.

It wasn’t the showstopper it might have been, merely the result of a well-constructed maul but it was deserved nonetheless.

By that time skipper Greg King and 19-year-old dual registered winger Josh Skelcey had combined to put Nile Dacres in for the game’s first try.

Another teenager, Sam Olver, added seven points with the boot and Moseley were coasting 17-0 at the turn.

Nottingham dragged themselves back into it with scores from Malton and Matt Everard, but when the Moseley Mites looked like they had lost their way, the experience of Craig Voisey and Sam Brown steadied the ship.

Brown barrelled his way over for the decisive try and Kevin’s Kids had secured what his first choice players haven’t – a victory. And it was made all the more notable for the fact that the average age of the side was

just 22, which just proves, untapped potential might be hard to find – but it’s worth the effort.
