Match Report

By Paul Smith – Birmingham Mail

Mose hope to see the back of Bristol

Moseley's PA announcer greeted Bristol on to the field with the message: “Welcome to Billesley Common , we weren’t expecting to be seeing you this season.”

Eighty minutes later the Red and Black faithful were fervently hoping Andy Robinson’s talented squad will not feature on next year’s Moseley fixture list, after their team had been on the receiving end of an emphatic nine-try defea

The hosts’ defence held firm for 30 minutes, during which good defensive patterns and a solid set-piece prevented Bristol’s powerful ball carriers from dictating terms. Centre Greg King crossed twice for Moseley in six second-half minutes, and the hosts also had the satisfaction of dominating the closing moments.

However, the positives stop there; Bristol bossed the remainder of the contest, and with Welsh international half-backs Dwayne Peel and Matt Morgan calling the shots, were good value for their win.

The fully-professional visitors, who have already beaten main title rivals Worcester, fielded eight full internationals in their starting 15, a statistic which accurately reflects their ambition and commercial strength. However, speaking afterwards, Moseley try-scorer King said the hosts would not be hiding behind the two clubs’ differing financial situations.

He said: “We don’t use the part-time versus full-time thing as an excuse. We have managed very well in the four seasons I have been at the club, we just want to compete and be up there.

“It’s a bit disappointing that we haven’t got a win yet, but it is coming.

“We scored a couple of tries in the second half, and battled back well, which is good against a side as strong as Bristol.

“Their structures were very good, but three of their first-half tries came from system errors in our defence.”

Bristol hooker Ross Johnstone’s double broke the early deadlock, after which further tries from Morgan and David Lemi meant the visitors had banked the bonus point at half-time.

Their five further second-half scores were shared between backs Ryan Edwards, Gareth Maule and Gus Slowik, plus Max Crumpton and a penalty try
