Match Report

By Sean Geary – Birmingham Mail

Moseley fail again to bag first victory

Moseley’s frustrating start to the season continued in Clonmel as an opening win in the British and Irish Cup slipped through their fingers.

Kevin Maggs’ side trailed Munster A 11-6 at the break, despite playing most of the rugby, and an Adam Caves try on 46 minutes levelled the game after the forwards nearly mauled their way over the line.

At that point, the momentum was Moseley’s but indiscipline cost the visitors dearly and Munster’s out-half Rory Scannell converted two penalties soon after to quell the comeback.

Moseley, down to 14 men after Stefan Thorp was sent to the bin, rallied and hit back through a Samuel Olver penalty but Scannell restored Munster’s lead with his fifth penalty to make it 20-14.

The Championship team huffed and puffed as they searched for that crucial second try and they very nearly got it on 72 minutes when substitute Adam Parkins was stopped inches short of the line after a rampaging run by Dan Hobbs-Awoyemi.

That near-miss proved crucial as six minutes later Paddy Butler crossed for Munster’s second try with Scannell converting to put the result beyond doubt.

Moseley showed great spirit to earn themselves a deserved losing bonus point at the death when substitute Caolan Ryan touched down and converted late on, but that elusive first win still awaits.

Moseley started poorly and were a try behind before they even had the chance to get their hands on the ball. Munster winger Ronan O’Mahony dotted down after just two minutes from Scannell’s chip through with the out-half off target with the conversion. The Red and Blacks were physically superior to their Irish counterparts, especially in the scrum, and Olver’s penalty made it 5-3 on ten minutes.

Scannell and Olver traded penalties midway through a scrappy first half, after infringements in the scrum, to move the score to 8-6. A second Scannell penalty on the stroke of half-time gave the hosts an 11-6 lead and the out-half’s three second-half penalties , along with Butler’s try, proved the difference between the sides.

More B&I Cup action for Moseley next week as they host Nottingham at Billesley Common.
