Match Report

Mose crush rivals to ensure survival

By David Lawrence – Birmingham Mail

Moseley brushed aside relegation rivals Plymouth with ease to safeguard their Greene King IPA Championship future.

Cheered on by the majority of the 2,306 supporters, many of them enjoying Billesley Common’s impressive new stand for the first time, the result was never in doubt after they ran in the first of three tries after just three minutes.

And for Kiwi No.8 Chris Brightwell the win meant it was a double celebration after he was named (Supporters) player of the season.

He said: “We knew we could pull it off if we had our set-piece right and that was the case, the scoreboard doesn’t lie.

“We have been picking up points even when we have been losing and anyone who has seen us over the last month will have seen that we have been playing some good footy but maybe not as clinical as we were last year which is why we were in the position we were.

“We knew we needed to build a score so that early try was vital.”

Prop Nathan Williams rumbled over for that vital opening score and a brace of Will Hooley penalties took the home side into an 11-0 lead at the break.

For a team needing to win to maintain their own Championship status, Plymouth looked a spent force. And they were not helped when, in the space of 15 minutes at the start of the second half, they had flanker Rhys Oakley taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg and winger Toby Howley-Berridge sin-binned.

Kevin Maggs’ side couldn’t make the extra man count but it was only a matter of time before they ran in their second score, full-back Tom Collins intercepting a pass near his own line before darting the length of the field to dot down in the corner.

Ed Siggery came off the bench for the final stages and completed the scoring, reaching out to ground the ball after another great effort from the forwards. Hooley slotted over four penalties and late replacement Sam Olver converted the final try.

Brightwell added: “The last few months have not been the best for the supporters but I think the club is heading in a good direction.

“It was a brilliant atmosphere and great to play in front of that many people. The crowd were awesome and it would be good if we could have that every week.”
