Match Report

A game too far for young Moseley side

By Tom Innes – Birmingham Mail

Tries from Will Owen, Josh Skelcey and Caolan Ryan helped Moseley RFC to narrow a 33-point deficit to just 12 with 10 minutes to play, but that was as good as it got for Kevin Maggs' side.

A dogged second-half comeback restored Moseley’s pride but wasn’t enough to bring anything back from their end-of-season trip to Jersey.

Tries from Will Owen, Josh Skelcey and Caolan Ryan helped the visitors to narrow a 33-point deficit to just 12 with 10 minutes to play, but that was as good as it got for Kevin Maggs’ side.

Moseley’s head coach admitted motivation levels were not as high as for the critical encounter against Plymouth Albion at Billesley Common the previous weekend, which the home team won convincingly to secure Championship survival at Albion’s expense.

“The squad came here and were a bit relaxed,” he said. “It can feel like a team jolly coming to Jersey, although the boys were a bit disappointed with the weather – they were expecting flip-flops and shorts.

“I’m not going to criticise the players, we had a young side out with several players coming back from injury, and they fought back well. There’d been a lot of energy and emotion put into the Plymouth game.”

Although heavy pre-match rain blew over just before kick-off, the slippery conditions meant Jersey were even more likely than usual to make use of their large pack.

Flanker Ryan Hodson claimed two tries from rolling mauls, the second after Moseley’s Tom Warren was sin-binned as a result of several penalties conceded by his side. Prop Sam Lockwood powered over from close range and there was a brace for wing Fautua Otto to complete the first-half scoring.

There were no changes in personnel for Moseley after half-time, but the visitors were immediately more competitive, winning a stream of penalties and eventually opening their account as Owen picked up Sam Olver’s bouncing pass and made a powerful burst to the line.

Skipper Ben Nutley played a key role as his side scored two tries in three minutes to narrow the gap further; first, the flanker gave a scoring pass to Skelcey after claiming a kick ahead, and then he combined with fellow forwards Greg Charlton and Ed Siggery to set up Ryan.

Moseley continued to press but a late bid to attack out of defence ended with Jersey’s Redditch-born replacement Joel Dudley fielding Olver’s chip ahead and pouncing for his side’s sixth and final try.

Jersey’s efforts enabled the home side to reverse last season’s final standings in the Championship, when Moseley finished seventh and the Islanders were in 11th place.
