Match Report

By David Lawrence - Birmingham Mail

Ed Sheldon back among the tries after year of injury hell

A year after suffering a nightmare knee injury, Birmingham Moseley winger Ed Sheldon was back among the tries on Saturday with a hat-trick to help his side to victory over mid-table visitors Old Albanian.

And he admits the misery of a season on the sidelines has helped him focus on getting the Billesley Common side back into the Championship.

The former Thornbury flyer damaged his ACL during a pre-season clash in Ireland last year.

“I was out for a year exactly,” Sheldon said.

“It was when we were in Leinster a week before the Championship season started which was really gutting because I didn’t get that cap in the Championship.

“Having that injury really drives you on. It was one of those things and you have to take the positives.

“It meant I was able to work hard in the gym and put on a lot more weight which is something you need when you play at this level of rugby.

“There’s still more work to do but I’m getting there and as a team we’re getting there.

“I didn’t expect to come back this season and do great things, it is more about catching up with the speed of things and the skills allowing me to push on for next season and hopefully to get that cap at the next level.”

Sheldon’s treble was the icing on the cake for Moseley who appeared to be cruising to victory when skipper Alex Grove claimed the bonus try with still an hour to play.

But they hadn’t accounted for their visitors’ never say die attitude as they clawed their way back into the game, running in five tries themselves on a day dominated by free-flowing rugby and dodgy defending.

Grove, hooker Jake Farnworth and full-back Mike Penn all crossed inside the opening 11 minutes with the captain and Sheldon adding to the tally for a 42-7 interval lead.

But Grove’s second half double to complete his hat-trick was all Mose had to show from a disjointed second half while the Hertfordshire visitors showed their battling spirit as tries from Matt Miles, Ross Hamilton, George Elliott and Nick Foster added to Craig Dowsett’s first half effort.

Grove was sent off late on following his altercation with Old Albanian hooker Miles – the latter escaping without as much as a ticking off.

Sheldon added: “It was difficult to fault us for the first 40 minutes, we were outstanding but we then slipped off it a little bit and fair play to Old Albanian as they came back at us. We’ve only lost the once and we keep putting the pressure on Hartpury to see how they do but we have to focus on our own game week in, week out.”
