The following match report has appeared on the
Moseley 25 Newport 33
Newport had won 14-5 (1999/0) and 22-21 (2005/6) on their last two pre-season friendly visits to Moseley and were looking for a hat-trick of wins against Moseley who included former Newport scrum-half James Ireland who partnered Matthew Jones as he had done at Wales U21 level.
Moseley were first on the scoreboard when Newport centre was penalised in front of the posts for an illegal tackle. When Newport were awarded a penalty in the Moseley 22, flanker Craig Hill took a tap and shrugged off a couple of tackles to score near the posts for outside-half Dan Griffiths to convert and make it 7-3 to Newport.Newport forwards were now getting quick ball and centres Williams and Nick Wakley made ground and the ball was passed inside to Craig Hill to score his 2nd try. Griffiths again converted to make the score 14-3. A forward drive set up a ruck on the Moselely 22 and scrum-half Matt Thomas kicked over the cover for wing Mike Poole to take the ball and touch down for a try converted again by Dan Griffiths to make it 19-3 to Newport. Moseley outside-half used the wind and a drive from a 5 metre line-out resulted in an unconverted tray and brought the score to 21-8 to Newport after the first 20 min period.
Both sides made changes for the 2nd period. After some scrappy play a Scott Williams kick ahead rebounded off a defender and back to Scott and the ball was moved wide for replacement win Matt Burke to score near the posts and replacement outside-half James Dixon to convert. Dixon then made a break taking the ball into the Moseley 22 but a turnover resulted in a Moseley score at the other end to make the score 28-13 to Newport at the end of the second 20 min period.
Moseley endeavoured to use the wind in the final 40 min period. A quick tap penalty in their 22 followed by some strong running resulted in a converted try near the posts. Pressure on the Newport scrum saw Moseley No 8 pick up on the half-way to make ground before the ball finally ended with the right wing to make the score 28-25 to Newport. Newport tightened up their game and retained the ball well for long periods. After a few forward drives the ball was fed to Scott Williams who crashed through a tackle to feed Nick Wakley who with two men outside decided to dummy and step inside to make the line for a final score of 33-25 to Newport.
