Moseley 25 Ebbw Vale 12 at Billesley
An entertaining first competitive work out of the pre season gave all
the available squad a well earned victory over the Welsh Premiership
side, Ebbw Vale by 25-12.
Despite some seemingly over enthusiastic referee’s interpretation of
diving into rucks, which constantly interrupted continuity for both
sides, Moseley had the greater share of possession and the more numerous
passages of play and thoroughly deserved the win.
Coaches Smith and Caskie mixed up the strong, directly Moseley
contracted, set of forwards fielding almost completely different packs
for the two halves, each including one half of potential first choice
Playing down the slope with the wind in the first half Moseley’s forward
dominance was eventually rewarded in the eighteenth minute by a typical
pack drive from a line out in front of the clubhouse with Paul Arnold
claiming the try. Richard Vasey’s excellent conversion from wide out
added the extra points. Ebbw Vale fought back and were rewarded with a
try following a superb cross field kick from the flyhalf caught by
winger Greg Roberts. Paul Cox then added an opportunist try following
some sloppy defending on the Steelmens’ try line.
Despite the complete change in pack personnel, Moseley continued to
dominate the majority of possession and put together a number of
entertaining phases only to be thwarted by the backs limited cutting
edge despite the urgings of Vasey and Reay and the swift passing of
debutant 18 year old ex England Schoolboys scrum half Jordi Pasqualin.
Eventually James Rodwell went over in the 63rd minute to reflect
Moseley’s superiority only for some poor defending to allow Will Jones
to score a well worked try. The scoring was finished off by American
wing Brendan Gray after a series of entertaining phases.
All in all this was a good work out. The lack of a cutting edge in the
backs should be remedied with the return of our dual registered players
Jack Adams, Charlie Sharples and Dan Norton together with Tristan
Roberts and Henry Trinder in the backs. The true test will be against
Worcester at Six Ways next Saturday.
