TOO OT TO HANDLE
Six-try haul just the tonic for Smith's men
From DAVID LAWRENCE at Billesley Common
JUST seven days after their mauling at the hands of Exeter Chiefs,
Moseley swept aside an Otley side still searching for their ?rst win of
Coach Ian Smith had asked for a reaction to the Devon debacle and he
certainly got it with a six-try show and six different players on the
end of them.
The home side dominated from the start, the only criticism being that
they allowed a battling Yorkshire outfit back into the game.
Moseley could not have wished for a better start as they coasted into a
19-0 lead inside the opening 10 minutes.
Their first attack of the game produced a try from Nathan Bressington. A
lineout on Moseley's left was worked to centre Andy Reay who jinked
through the defence before feeding his winger who touched down between
the posts. Vasey made no mistake with the conversion.
With the Yorkshire visitors still coming to terms with that. Their hosts
doubled their lead three minutes later. This time it was the turn of the
forwards with Rodwell collecting a pass from Vasey 15 metres out.
He showed strength and determination to break through two tackles and
managed to ground the ball at the foot of one of the uprights – perfect
for Vasey to slot over his second conversion.
Rodwell, dynamic throughout, then picked up at the base of the scrum
before passing to Neil Mason who ran in for Moseley's third on ten
minutes, this time unconverted.
With such a handy lead, the Billesley Common side appeared to lose
concentration and allowed Otley back into the game three minutes later
when a power ful run from second row Paul Williams saw him over after
collecting the final pass from Robin Kitching on the left flank. The
game then went through a period in midfield before bursting into life
again just before the interval.
Moseley bagged their fourth try of the afternoon on 35 minutes when
winger Charlie Sharples crept in on the right after good work by Richard
Bignell and full-back Andy Binns.
But Otley hit back again with the last move of the half, centre Paul
Mooney storming through with Tom Rhodes adding the extras to close the
gap to 24-12 at the break.
Williams made a break for the visitors soon after the restart only to be
upended by Binns but it was the Yorkshiremen who added to the try fest
on 52 minutes when Mooney scampered through for his second of the game.
Rhodes kicked the conversion but the score spurred Moseley on and they
hit back three minutes later when replacement Tris Roberts scored in the
corner, the referee playing advantage after Jack Adams had been tripped
as he went to gather his kick over the head of full-back Ian
The home side's Paul Arnold was sent to the sin bin on the hour and this
prompted the visitors to grab their fourth try when back row Mick
McComish powered over. And a sixth try from Adams made sure of maximum
It could even have been more for Moseley in the final few minutes,
replacement Mark Evans driving over the line over for the referee to
decide that the ball had not been grounded.
