BIG MATCH PREVIEW -

Joe Heaton's Big Match Previews will appear here from the Exeter Game

MOSELEY v London Scottish -  at Billesley Common - Saturday, 29th August 2009, k. o. 3pm (but come for lunch!)

The return of London Scottish to Moseley marks yet another milestone in their remarkable return. In May, Scottish put the seal on a near-perfect season with a win against Canterbury at the Athletic Ground, leaving a draw away to Rugby Lions as the only blemish. The year had seen the club win 25 matches out of 26 to claim the National League 3 South championship and gain promotion to this seasonís new-look "National 1".

Formed in 1878, the club turned professional in 1996 and was playing in the top division as recently as 1999. The club was placed into administration in 1999 and a nominal merger with London Irish took place. With limited resources they managed to finish in a creditable 12th place which would have saved them from relegation had they not fallen into administration at the season's end. The original amateur club rejoined the leagues at the bottom of the pyramid after effectively being relegated 9 divisions. The club has since progressed back up through 6 divisions to National Division One for the 2009-2010 season, and still shares the Athletic Ground with Richmond.

London Scottish have produced more Scottish international players than any other club. Past players include Iain Laughland, Gavin Hastings, Paul Burnell, Derek White,Damian Cronin, Mike Biggar, Al Biggar, Alastair McHarg, Rob Wainwright,Iain Morrison, Derek Lee, Simon Holmes, Ronnie Erikson, Kenny Logan and Max Evans.

Their opening pre-season friendly saw them host Blackheath for a double-bill. Club, deciding to turn out two sides of equal strength, overcame a good start from the hosts to win 38-22 in the first match against a second string Exiles side,  Blackheath outscoring Scottish by six tries to four.

But in the second match a strong Scots side, orchestrated at fly-half by former England Sevens player and Exiles player/coach, Simon Amor, ended the afternoon 28-14 winners.

Other current players include former Mose men James Brown, and Gary Trueman

Update - Additional notes from London Scottish

Heritage: LSFC is a world famous Rugby Club. Originating in 1878, it was formed to provide an environment in which resident and visiting Scotsmen could enjoy the great game of rugby as players and spectators. This proud heritage has produced more international players for Scotland than any other club, the most recent of which includes Paul Burnell, Derek White, Damian Cronin and Gavin Hastings. London Scottish FC is a Scottish based club, playing in England. We are affiliated to both the RFU and SRU; however we are a club open to all nationalities and have played in the English leagues for over 100 years. London Scottish is a rugby club where you can find a traditional Scottish welcoming in the heart of London.

History: Based at the Athletic ground, Richmond, LSFC has played in the top divisions of the English National Leagues having turned professional in 1996 and been promoted to the Zurich Premiership as recently as 1997. Unfortunately, the club was placed into administration in 1999 and relegated 8 divisions by the RFU, but showed their strength of character by reforming as an amateur club in 2000. With a remarkable 6 promotions in 9 seasons, LSFC are excitingly now back in National Division One, only one below the Championship and gunning for further promotion.

Now: National League One with aspirations to go higher. A thriving Academy and youth/mini set up, 6 senior teams. Membership has grown to 1500 and the 1st XV regularly plays to crowds of 1000 plus. In seasonís past our most popular league fixture against our great neighbours Richmond FC attracted a crowd in excess of 3000 which we have featured on Sky Sports and in the National press.

Brett Taylor our Director of Rugby has a added a few words:

"AS DIRECTOR OF RUGBY I AM REALLY PLEASED WE CAN COME TO MOSELEY FOR A PRE SEASON GAME. THE OPPORTUNITY CAME ABOUT AS I AM ON THE RFU LEVEL 4 COURSE WITH DON AND IAN. THEY ASKED IF LONDON SCOTTISH WOULD BE INTERESTED AND I ACCEPTED STRAIGHT AWAY. THEY ARE 2 COACHES I GREATLY ADMIRE AND THE TEAMS THEY PRODUCE PLAY THE GAME THE WAY I WOULD WANT TO COACH IT. THE TEST FOR US WILL BE HUGE, BUT IF WE AS A CLUB WANT TO MOVE INTO THE HIGHER LEVELS, WE NEED TO BE EXPOSED TO THE STANDARDS CLUBS LIKE MOSLEY SET.
THERE IS ALSO THE RETURN OF GARY TRUEMAN BACK TO MOSELEY. GARY AND JAMES BROWN WENT ON LOAN FOR A WHILE AND SPEAK FONDLY OF THEIR TIME THERE".
