Match Report

Mark Woodrow, Birmingham Mail

Worcester marched into the last four of the British & Irish Cup after outclassing Moseley at Sixways. The Warriors blew the visitors away in a first half that demonstrated the Championship table does not lie.

Despite being below their best, several moves broke down due to forward passes or needless penalties, Worcester scored five tries before the interval. They added another two early in the second half to stretch the lead to 52-3 on 51 minutes and end the match as a contest.

With the result decided both coaches made changes from their benches and Moseley adapted to the new blood on the pitch the better of the sides. To their credit they never stopped battling and they shaded the final quarter of the match in terms of possession, territory and tries.

Pat Sanderson led the scoring for the Warriors with two tries in the first 25 minutes, both rewards for his excellent support play. The flanker looked odds-on for a rare hat-trick until his afternoon was cut short by a hamstring injury.

Right-wing Marcel Garvey snuffed out a rare Moseley attack by intercepting a stray pass on halfway and racing in for the first of his tries. He got his second just before the break after good work from man-of-the-match Alex Grove.

In between Garvey’s two scores centre Alex Crockett weaved his way through the visitors’ defence for a fine solo score. Fly-half Joe Carlisle was flawless with the boot in the first half, kicking all five conversions as well as a penalty to stretch the lead to 38-3 at the interval.

Soon after the restart replacement scrum-half Ollie Frost scored from the base of a scrum and he was soon followed over by Grove, who dummied his way through the defence. Hooker Ed Shervington got Worcester’s final try on 77 minutes, capping the move of the match, which was begun in his own 22 by Carlisle.

Either side of that Moseley put some respectability into the scoreline through prop Terry Sigley and centre Andrew Borgen.
