Market Bosworth 0 Moseley 29 - April 5th 2008
For the second time this season Moseley Colts travelled the short journey to the lovely town of Market Bosworth where they took on the Leicestershire County Cup runners-up.
Having beaten Market Bosworth earlier this season in a dour encounter and looking to bury the spectre of last week’s defeat by Dudley Kingswinford, Moseley Colts approached the game in determined mood. With the county contingent away preparing for Sunday’s N Mids vs. Staffs match, a much-changed Moseley team took the field, under the captaincy of Jack Richards and we welcomed back to Moseley colours Dan McCue and Louis Stelling after long absences through school commitments.
In a combative first half performance, littered by unforced errors and played in atrocious conditions, Moseley was forced to defend stoically against some heavy pressure from Market Bosworth. Our first real piece of quality possession, however, saw us take a 5 – 0 lead after an incisive breakaway by Jon Betty was finished off by Dan Micklewright.
Following a quick turnaround at half time, fresh legs were introduced and with a slight tweak to the game plan Moseley Colts soon began to take control.
Stuart Doust revelled in the space he was given out on the wing to score 2 excellent tries; Dan Lavander powered over from short range after some really good keep-ball by the forwards – where Jamie Harrop was giving a man-of-the-match performance and Calum Sheehan benefited from some hesitancy in the Market Bosworth defence to drive home the Moseley advantage as the opponents began to tire.
On a very breezy day, only 2 conversions were successful – 1 each for Alex and Louis and the final score of 29 – 0, I think, was a fair reflection of the Moseley effort. There may have been another try as the ref made the score 36 – 0 but no-one has owned up and in the words of one seasoned watcher, “…the ref didn’t get much right so we can discount it..!”
Many thanks to the team and coaches at Market Bosworth for their excellent hospitality (this includes the loan of balls for our warm-up, when ours were lost somewhere in transit from Staffordshire!) and for arranging the game at short notice. We look forward to welcoming them to Billesley next season.
This week (Saturday 12th April) Moseley Colts entertain Worcester Wanderers Colts at Billesley. Kick off time will be 5.00 to follow the first XV game.
