Under 14 Match Report V Vesyans (Away) Sun 09/10/2011

Preliminary Round, North Mids Cup

Moseley 45 - 5 Vesyans

On a blustery pitch by the cemetery it was never going to be a dead cert that we would proceed to the next round, however another ruthlessly efficient display ensured progress. After an even and scrappy first five minutes nerves were settled with a typical Jack Lester try beneath the posts, easily converted by Brandon.

After that it was business as usual with the forwards dominating possession, terrific work from Jeavon, Nick and Kobe presenting the backs with a solid platform and allowing Adam all the time in the world to pick his options.

The ball was spread both sides with intelligent running from the backs, John in particular running very impressive lines. Try of the day for me was Rory’s in the left hand corner, a fabulous move starting with good forward possession and the ball being spread wide at speed and finished superbly in the corner.

Half time 24-0

The second half was a procession but credit is due to our coaches for of the sporting way in which Moseley allowed Veseyans use of their players in order to make a game of it.  A special mention for Ewan Bell who was, for my money, the best tackler on both sides. One outcome of this policy is the development of a new award. This is to be known as the “TOp Scorer of Points for the Other Team” or “TOSPOT” trophy and is currently being held by Fitzy, V’s best ever full back.

Overall this was a very satisfactory performance. The U14s are developing into a very impressive unit. Attention needs to be given, however, to discipline, in particular backchat to the referee. This cost us 3 ten-yard penalties and needs to be eradicated if further progress is to be made.

Try scorers: Greg Naptin (2) – Jeavon Purewal (C) (1) – Jack Lester (2) – Rory Birchall (1) – Archie Clay (1) – Brandon Lea (5 Conversions)
