Match report

Moseley's unbeaten British Irish Cup campaign comes to thumping halt at Cross Keys

Sunday Mercury

Moseley’s unbeaten start to their British Irish Cup campaign came to a thumping halt at Principality Premiership side Cross Keys.

The Welsh side outplayed their visitors in every department, but significantly Keys won the forward battles and didn’t allow error-prone Moseley time or space to bring the backs into play.

The early stages suggested a much more even contest, as Moseley began strongly, forcing a succession of penalties near to the home side’s try line. However, all Moseley had to show was a ninth minute Oliver Thomas penalty that gave them a short-lived lead.

On 13 minutes, the referee lost patience with Keys’ persistent infringements, and sin-binned hooker Gerwyn Price, but this only inspired the hosts to raise their game, as two Gareth David penalties earned them a lead they would never relinquish.

With 10 minutes to go to the interval, Moseley winger Jamie Hearn was yellow carded, and Cross Keys exploited the man advantage ruthlessly.

On 34 minutes, Leon Andrews’ angled run took him over after a good spell of pressure, but David missed the conversion.

Five minutes later Keys extended their lead when a tap penalty sparked a quick break, and a missed pass found left-wing Nathan Trowbridge who accelerated before stepping inside full-back Brad Hunt. David added the conversion for an 18-3 half-time lead.

The home forwards continued in dominant vein after the interval, but a 53rd minute break by centre Callum McBurnie raised hopes of a Moseley fight back until Keys hauled him down.

A David penalty nudged the hosts further ahead, before three tries in the last 15 minutes underlined their superiority.

On 65 minutes right wing Kristian Baller made good ground near the touchline, before slipping a pass to flanker Jevon Groves who scored with ease, David adding the extras.

With six minutes left to play, Moseley full-back Hunt was sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on close to his own line, and as they did in the first half, Keys rammed home their advantage.

From the resulting scrum, replacement fly-half Owen Jones popped the ball up to Andrews, who went over for his second try, thereby securing the bonus point. Andrews then converted, David having being replaced.

With the last play, Keys ran in their fifth try courtesy of Baller, who rounded off another fine move by touching down, with Andrews again successfully adding to the hosts’ tally, leaving Mose with a lot to do if they are to progress beyond the pool stage in this competition.
