Match Report

Moseley made to pay by leaders

By David Lawrence – Birmingham Mail

Bristol put on their Sunday best to sweep Moseley aside and stretch their lead at the top of the Championship.

But the visitors were not helped by playing the closing stages of each half a man down due to a first-half yellow card and an injury deep in the second period.

The opening quarter was an even affair with the players getting to grips with a slippery surface as much as sizing up their opponents.

Twice Glyn Hughes slotted over penalties for Moseley to hand them a three-point lead only for Matty James to hit back ensuring it was all square on 20 minutes.

But the game burst into life around the half-hour. Bristol centre Fautua Otto looked to have run in the opening try from 25 metres only to be held up by tackler Will Robinson.

The home side kept up the pressure, though, and a drive from the pack resulted in hooker Ross Johnston crashing over, James kicking the conversion.

Ben Pons was sent to the bin five minutes before the interval for dragging down another rolling maul and, moments later, referee Ross Campbell awarded the home side a penalty try after a scrum was collapsed just shy of the line.

James kicked the extras and repeated the feat moments before the half-time whistle after Otto dived in, the ball finding the centre wide on the right after the Moseley pack had been shoved off their own ball at a scrum in front of the posts.

There appeared no way back for the visitors but they attacked their hosts with gusto from the restart.

Hughes kicked ahead after some slick handling only to lose the race to the ball, while an excellent run from Brad Hunt deserved a try but his final pass was knocked on by Andy Reay as the line loomed.

With 48 minutes on the clock, Moseley finally chalked up their first try when, after charging down a kick close to the Bristol line, the ball was swung to the opposite wing and full-back Anthony Carter dived over. Hughes kicked the conversion.

But hopes of a fightback ended there as flanker Marco Mama exploited a gap in the visitors’ line to stroll over for a fourth Bristol try, replacement Matt Jones converting.

Replacement centre Will Helu ran in a fifth try a minute from time to give Jones a simple conversion.

And the win was wrapped up by winger Matt Williams – Jones’ kick edging them towards the half-century.
