Match Report

By Geoff Berkeley – Birmingham Post

Moseley guaranteed their Championship status for another season after they did what was required to see off basement boys Esher at the Pillar Data Arena.

Safety looked to be all but secured when the Red and Blacks powered into a 17-0 lead midway through the first half thanks to tries from Dave Lyons and Bradley Davies. Jonathan Hylton got one back for the home side before the break but Moseley went over once more, five minutes from time, with Dan Sanderson touching down to finish off the tie.

Having won their previous three games this season against the Surrey side, including last week’s play-off fixture at Billesley Common, Kevin Maggs’ side were confident of making it a quartet of victories. And they soon hit the ground running as Ollie Thomas slotted over an eighth-minute penalty.

With Moseley piling forward, the scoreboard soon had a one-sided look to it as the visitors took their chances well to take a commanding lead. Lyons was the first over the whitewash after benefiting from a well-worked move, before Michael Ellery pounced on Hylton’s misguided up and under to see Davies in for their second try.

Despite the scoreline, Esher did not give in and were rewarded on 26 minutes. After pinning Moseley back, the ball was spread wide for Hylton to finish in the corner. However, the visitors kept their composure and extended their advantage just before the interval, with Thomas nailing a penalty.

Facing a 20-5 deficit, the hosts knew they had to strike first in the second period to stand any chance of clawing their way back into the tie. But, luckily for Mose, they only conceded a long-range penalty effort from Peter Synnott.

The match and Championship survival was then sealed when Sanderson came on to power over before Esher’s Seb Stegmann crossed for a late consolation try. Moseley head coach Kevin Maggs said he was proud of his players and the effort they had put in.

“It was just about winning today,” Maggs said. “It wasn’t a pretty game but we held the ball for long periods and we came out eventual winners. “We got the job done and that is the main thing.

“Play-off rugby has been tough - we have only lost one game, at London Scottish, so it is brilliant to be where we are. But the boys have worked hard and I am really proud of them. The effort and attitude from everybody at the club has been outstanding in the last six, seven weeks, so they deserved it.”
